Vista Tutorial - Network Card issues

I have a fairly new desktop (8 months old) with windows xp. On another
partition I installed Vista Business, then updated the chipset drivers for my
system. The network adapter was not picked up so I installed it manually with
the updated drivers from the manufacturer (integrated adapter) which seemed
to work (it made a connection) but when I re-booted there was no network
connection and the light on the card is not longer on. In the device manager
it says the card is working properly. I tried reinstalling the adapter driver
but to no avail. My network/internet connection works fine in XP.

I'm suspecting it may be some sort of security issue or possibly something
with the drivers although I contacted the manufacturer of the machine
(Systemax) and they said they've had no reported problems with the drivers.

Please help...I'm wasting too much time on this.

It's Atheros L2 Fast Ethernet 10/100-T Controller. It's an integrated card
with the Asus P5Gc-MX mATX Motherboard w/LAN

I downloaded the Vista drivers from the Systemax (the computer's
manufacturer).

Fist I installed the chipset drivers and the light on the card came on but
the adapter was not recognized. I restarted and the light on the card was no
longer lit. I then installed the specific driver for the card which seemed to
take and although the device shows as working properly in the Device Manager
the light was not on and when trying to connect the message would say "the
network cable is unplugged." I tried powering down my DSL modem and router
but nothing happened.

I'm not sure where to go from here.

They said they've had no problems with the driver. They also said that since
the device had been showing as working properly in the device manager that it
must be a problem with the OS.

Since my last response I went directly to the ASUS website and downloaded
their drivers for the network card and those won't even install. I get some
message that "that name is being used by a service." I had deleted the device
and any software related. At this point I'm ready to give up although I would
like to get familiar with the OS. My XP still works fine.

I have an Asus P5K motherboard, and was getting terrible network performance
using the latest Ethernet driver from Asus. I let Windows Update look for
updates, and it found a newer driver. Against all the advice I've seen about
installing drivers from Windows Update, I let it install the update, and the
network has been great since. Doesn't sound like you have much to lose by
trying another driver.

You mentioned that it's an integrated adapter. You probably also need the
current motherboard chipset drivers, so you could try updating those too.

asus and for whatever reason it worked. I think the chipset drivers did the
trick.

I was then able to get the divers updated via Windows update. I feel like
I'm back in Win 95.
