Vista - MISSING SATA HARD DRIVE

Since you are using a web interface, you may not realize that this is really
a newsgroup. You will get far more out of this resource if you learn to use
a newsreader. There are many good newsreaders for Windows, but you can use
Outlook Express (XP) or Windows Mail (Vista) since you already have it.

partition that the computer mfg put there so you could recover your computer
to factory condition should you ever need to. Good job!

Why did you think it was so hard to do? Because you weren't supposed to.
Contact the mfg for instructions for restoring it or for recovery media
because it doesn't sound like you knew what it was and therefore likely did
not make recovery disks yourself.

Well that is great that u got that figured out, but now the problem at hand with the disapearing Sata drive. Anyone know of an actual fix for this?

I have the same issue on a HP DV9810us Laptop running Vista SP1.

On this laptop, if I put a Western Digital 120G hard drive in the second bay, it dissapears when resuming from sleep.

I discovered that if I put a Toshiba 120G drive in the second bay instead, this problem doesn't appear!!

With the WD drive, I tried setting the sleep time to "Never", but this didn't make any difference.

On further investigation (both drives are known to be good), it turns out that the WD drive use the default Microsoft SATA device handler, where as the Toshiba drive uses it's own device driver.

This definitely points to a MS SATA device driver issue.

MS SATA Driver details:
Driver Provider: Microsoft
Driver Version: 6.0.6001.18000
Driver Date: 6/21/2006

I tried running "Driver Update", but Microsoft reported that this was the most up to date driver at this time (January 14th 2009)

Western Digital doesn't provide any updated drivers (or any drivers for that matter) from their web site.

As posted on numerous occassions do NOT use winupdate for drivers, obtain
them, in your case, from HP, and then only if needed to cure a known problem
or add functionality

MS does not write/make sata drivers they are written by hardware
manufacturers

Neither HP (for this notebook) or Western Digital (for the specific drive) have drivers listed on their websites for SATA drives.
They just use the default driver.
