Vista - Canon EOS Rebel XTi/EOS 400D digital

"The problem was caused by a compatibility issue between Window Vista an EOS
400D". I have a Gateway GT5464 Desktop Computer with Window Vista (32bit)
which Canon Inc. tells me should have PTP Picture Transfer Protocol
installed.I have downloaded the latest and recommended software from Canon
and still the computer ignores the camera.-----Is there something else that I
am missing and where do I find the PTP Picture Transfer Protocol for Window
Vista?

I use it with my girlfriends laptop (Vista Home Premium 32bit) and on my own
pc (Vista Premium x64) and it's automatically recocnized and Windows Photo
Gallery picture import is selectable in the popup whenever I connect the
eos400d and switch it on.

You did switch the camera on didn't you? That's the only way I can imagine
it being ignored, if it's not switched on

Make sure you have the latest drivers and software for your camera(s)
downloaded and installed from the Canon website. The PTP connection was used
to resolve connection problem before new WIA driver was available for Vista.
If you want to use PTP it is selected on the camera in the "Communication"
setting from the tools #2 menu on my Rebel XT, it should be in a similar
location on your camera(s).

After checking the Canon site they do no have a Vista WIA driver available
for the XTi so you must use the PTP connection setup from your camera
instead! They do have other updated software programs available on their
download site. Just enter your camera info to find updated downloads. This

I agree, no software is needed for the Canon to interact with Vista at
all. Just do as K111 said and select PTP from within the cameras menu.
I used PTP one time to transfer pics and found it to be much easier and
quicker to just use a card reader.

I am having a similar problem. I installed all the Canon software from CD and
then installed all the Vista updates from the Canon website. Windows Vista
Ultimate recognized my Canon EOS Rebel XTi/400D camera and installed the
generic driver when the camera was first plugged in. The problem is that the
Canon EOS Utility program will open and then just disappear (it doesn't
recognize the camera). I have found that the Canon Rebel XTi/400D does not
have the "Communication" option in settings so the option described below
does not apply to this camera.

Any other ideas are appreciated.

Vista64 isn't supported by Canon at this time. But Vista64 will recognize
the camera so I just use the standard Windows image transfer utility to
transfer the files, then open the Canon editing program.

Update to my earlier post (note: using Vista 32-bit).....

I spoke to guy at Canon tech support. I had my Rebel XTi plugged into a USB
hub. He had me unplug the hub and unplug a Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000
webcam. Both the hub and the QuickCam were plugged into USB ports on the
back of the PC. He said the Rebel XTi needed to be plugged into a USB port
on the back of the PC. The EOS Utility software worked fine and the Rebel
XTi was still listed in the Portable Devices section of Device Manager.

I did some further testing and found:

1. With the Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000 unplugged from the PC, the Rebel XTi
and EOS Utility 2.2 worked like a champ when plugged into a USB port on the
back of the PC and a USB port on the front of the PC and even plugged into
the same USB hub that did not work earlier.

2. Plug in the Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000 into any USB port (on PC or USB
hub) and the Canon EOS Utility will not communicate with the Rebel XTi. This
includes even going into Device Manager and selecting to Disable the Logitech
QuickCam Pro 9000. In short, if the LogiTech is connected to the PC at the
same time as the Rebel XTi, then the Canon EOS Utility is not going to work.

My current solution is to plug my Rebel XTi USB cable into the USB hub and
plug the Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000 into the USB hub (easier for me to
reach). Use the QuickCam as usual (IM, Skype, etc.). When I need to
download photos from the Rebel XTi, I will just unplug the QuickCam before I
connect the Rebel XTi to its cable that remains plugged into the hub.
