Try connecting the camera to the PC with the USB cable supplied. Vista should detect the camera's memory card as a removable drive and give you facilities to download the pictures.. -- Mike Hall - MVP http://msmvps.com/blogs/mikehall/default.aspx |

| | RE: Digital Camera Driver I understand Mike's point, but Cannon insists that the MS Vista universal drivers wre supposed to be compatible with the SD powershot 1000, so Cannon is not planning to upgrade its driver. I have tried (long before Mike's message) to connect the deive to my Vista-based laptop via the USB Cable Cannon supplied, to no avail. And while I appreciate Peter's suggestion, it should be my obligation to buy a card reader to gain the functionality that Vista and Cannon both promised, and that I have laready paid for, twice!! Pings? Does Device Manager show anything? I use my Canon SD600 often between my XP and Vista machines with no problem being recognized. Did this ever work and stop? Is your camera in the right mode? (turned on and switched into the computer attach mode (bottom most position on mine)). Does The USB cable work with other USB devices? Does your USB work in general with other devices? Did you try other USB ports? Bob F. | | Re: Digital Camera Driver My Thinkpad has Windows Vista and it is not reading the camera at all (not even as an external drive, anything) Message when camera connected with USB and clicked "on" "installing device driver software" --> "device driver software was not successfully installed" I was on the phone with Canon support for about an hour last week and tried everything from installation to rebooting, etc. He said to "wait around" for some new Vista/Canon updates - whatever that means! Any advice would be great. I agree that it's stupid that I have to buy a card reader just because Canon SD1000/Vista can't be compatible! -- karinafinny Posted via http://www.vistaheads.com |

The card cover seems a bit more robust, but that's on an A570 is, not the 1000. Canon's WEB site says... "Most Canon digital cameras that support the Picture Transfer Protocol (PTP) standard will connect to PCs running Windows Vista and allow for basic image transfer functionality. This includes all Canon digital cameras produced in the last several years. Please see the table below to see if your camera model is Vista compatible." The 1000 is not listed as being INcompatible with Vista. PTP-compatible cameras should require no special driver; just plug them in, then turn on the camera. A drive letter appears in Windows Explorer/My Computer. Apparently though, that isn't working for you. |

So I guess it's a good advice/way of looking at it to buy a SD card reader to "minimize wear and tear" of the USB drive. Is there a SD card reader anyone recommends that's reliable for under $10 around? Thanks ![]() -- karinafinny Posted via http://www.vistaheads.com |

Is there a SD > card reader anyone recommends that's reliable for under $10 around? dirt out of the camera's USB port is what I was referring to. They tend to break, at the hinge. For the card reader, check the Net to get a feel of what's available. Readers often handle multi-formats, so be sure that yours is among them. Circuit City, Fry's, Best Buy, office outlets and other stores sell card readers, and they're often on sale. |
