    my DVD drive

this just started. I have an acer laptop runing vista I also have norton
running as my viruis protection. When I try to play a dvd I get the following
message when I try to access the drive. "windows cannot access the specified
devise, path or file. you may not have the appropriete permission to access
them" also before this my dvd's would auto run a play with not problems. By
the way I'm the administrator even though there are no other users for my
    laptop

See if Windows update installed 943899 on your system, if it did remove it.
See KB 943899 for the explanation.
