Second SATA drive is not recognized

I installed a second SATA drive in my system, but Vista does not
recognize it. When I look in the Control Panel, Device Manager, Disk
Drives, it shows the two drives. I also see both drives if I enter the
BIOS settings. Windows Explorer does shows only the original drive.

The BIOS setting for the SATA drives is AHCI.

Do I need to format it? if so, where do I go to format it?

Any ideas?

Re: Second SATA drive is not recognized [ additional iformation]

Additional information. Here's what I see in the Control Panel, Device
Settings, under IDE-ATA/ATAPI controllers

IDE-ATA/ATAPI controllers
ATA Channel 0
ATA Channel 1
IDE Channel
IDE Channel
IDE Channel
IDE Channel
IDE Channel
IDE Channel
IDE Channel (yellow exclamation mark)
IDE Channel (yellow exclamation mark)
Intel(R) ICH9 6 Port STA AHCI Controller - 2922
Standard Dual Channel PCIIDE Controller
Standard Dual Channel PCIIDE Controller

If I click on the yellow exclamation mark, I get the following:

This device cannot start. (Code 10)

Click 'Check for solutions' to send data about this device to
Microsoft and to see if there is a solution available.

If I click on check for solutions, I get nothing. I disconnected the
second SATA drive, and I was still getting the same message.

Re: Second SATA drive is not recognized

You can go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management >
Disk Management. Select the disk, and initalize it and format it in there.

Thanks. That took care of the problem. It seems to me though as if
this is something that Windows Explorer, or the Properties Page, or
the Device Manager should have allowed me to take care of (or should
have recognized that I added a disk and provided an option to format
it).

Re: Second SATA drive is not recognized

Did you create a partition and format it with the Disk Management tool
and/or any tool the drive might have come with? Yes, new drives must be
partitioned and formatted before Windows can use them.
