| | dvd drive is stuck Last night HP Update told me it had a recommended update and I let it install. When I came back to to the computer 5 minutes later it had frozen. The whole system had frozen and I had no way of either stopping the update or shutting down the computer. I then manually turned off the computer and then restarted. Everything seemed fine until this morning when I tried to insert a disk and the disk drive would not open. When I tried to eject it in 'computer' it told me the drive was in use. I restarted and was told again that it was in use. Please help me! |

Research whatever that update was and either don't apply it again or contact HP tech support about what happened. Maybe this is a known issue but since it's their update, only they would know. To run System Restore, go to the Start Orb and in the Start Search box type "System Restore" without the quotes. System Restore will appear in the Programs result. Click on it, allow the UAC prompt, and follow the wizard. Malke -- MS-MVP Elephant Boy Computers www.elephantboycomputers.com Don't Panic! |

| | Re: dvd drive is stuck Thanks Malke I tried to restore but at the end was told it had failed because of an 'unspecified error' so I still can't get the dvd drive to work. Anymore ideas? | | Re: dvd drive is stuck There's a tiny hole in the front of your DVD drive. Straighten out a paper clip and gently push it into the hole and that will release the lock on the drive. then see if your drive will open and close correctly. | | Re: dvd drive is stuck thanks C.Skaggs I have tried that and although it opened, it still didn't open and close properly after this. I was online with HP technical support last night and was told I would need a new drive unfortunately that was the US support so now have to contact the UK branch- not as easy as they make out! Thank you to everyone who helped "C.Skaggs" wrote: Quote: > There's a tiny hole in the front of your DVD drive. | | Re: dvd drive is stuck Something wierd going on. I am a House Call Technician for our computer club. We have had 6 computers in the past 4 days with inoperable CD/DVD RW drives that were "bad." They were replaced and all is well — for now, at least. If any of this was caused by software updates, it will probably reoccur and folks will think we were nuts. | Vista Home Premium 32 bit. | Re: dvd drive is stuck I am new to this forum and not sure where to post, but I burned a DVD and now it won't ejct out of my computer. It is a TSST DVDR/RW TS-T632L ATA device. It is a HP IQ770., and it doesn't have a pin hole in front or near the drive. I am at a loss on how to get the dvd out, and I have only had this machine for about 3 weeks. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, MzSandy |

| | Re: dvd drive is stuck Have you tried to eject using the context menu for the drive in Computer? Did you ask HP (it is a new machine and under warranty)? You may have a defective unit.
