| | CD driver My CD driver has stopped working, I think it has been corrupted. It is the latest driver when I try to update all I get is that it is the latest. I cannot go back for a recovery point as that fails at every attempt even using different recovery points. I can't even re-install windows, no CD drive. -- Thanks for any help |

It's happened before and each time it was after downloading recommended Microsoft software updates. the first time I finally reloaded VISTA and then had to reload all my other software. PAIN!! Now there was an automatic update last night and I've got the same problem. Have tried to "contact" Microsoft - but that's a loss. I just hope that maybe someone in Microsoft will see this and help. | | Re: CD driver As long as the optical drive is ahead of the hard drive in the boot order in your BIOS you should be able to boot the computer with the dvd. Can you do that? If you attempt to boot with the dvd and you only get Windows, then check and change the boot order in the BIOS. Once you have the boot order right you can reinstall Windows if you are willing to install from scratch because the driver is loaded from the dvd. If you mean by "re-install" an in-place upgrade then you are correct because the drive would need to function under your present Windows installation to work. If the optical drive is ahead of the hard drive in the boot order and you still are not offered the option to boot from cd or dvd during computer start up then the drive is not funtioning. Check cables and connections and/or try a different drive.
