CD_ROM Driver Error

I've had Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit for about 4 months now. When I got
it and installed it my DVD-RW drive worked fine, read and burned. Now my
Drive no longer works. I checked in Device Manager it says that "windows was
unable to load driver, file is missing or corrupted (Error Code:39). I bought
a new DVD-RW drive and im still getting that message. I tried Windows Update
and i tried manually re-installing the driver with no success. I cant just
reinstall it from my Vista disk because the drive doesn't work. This is
irratating me to no end will someone help me out>>>>>>

Re: CD_ROM Driver Error

I have the same problem. It occured yesterday only i haven't recently
upgraded from XP to Vista, i've alway had Vista. It has happened to both my
CD/DVD drives, same error code appears. The KB link provided by Cal Bear 66
sayes page not available!! I've tried uninstalling to see if it automatically
reinstalls correctly but no joy. Any other suggestions?

Re: CD_ROM Driver Error

For whatever reason i still get "Sorry, the page you requested is not
available." with the link you supplied, did eventually manage to find it @
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/314060 (in case anyone else is
looking).

Anyway what you said was correct, delete the upper and lower filters worked
- and i'm now back in the game. Thanks v.much for you swift response and i
hope this helps anyone else who was getting as frustrated as i was.

Although i didn't upgrade from XP, i believe the reason for my error was
that i recently installed Nero but also uninstalled the previous cd/dvd
burning software 'Roxio', which is when the problem arose.

Re: CD_ROM Driver Error

the link works fine, so perhaps you have additional problems.... here's what
it says.....

To resolve this problem, remove the affected filter drivers. To do this,
follow these steps:
1. Click StartStart button, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then
click regedit in the Programs list.

User Account Control permission If you are prompted for an administrator
password or confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.
2. Locate, and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Caution There can be many instances of the registry subkey that is mentioned
in step 2. You must make sure that you are in the appropriate registry
subkey before modifying the UpperFilters and the LowerFilters values. To
verify that you are in the appropriate registry subkey, make sure that the
Default data value is DVD/CD-ROM and the Class data value is CDROM.
3. In the right pane, right-click UpperFilters, and then click Delete.
4. Click Yes to confirm the removal of the UpperFilters registry entry.
5. In the right pane, right-click LowerFilters, and then click Delete.
6. Click Yes to confirm the removal of the LowerFilters registry entry.
7. Exit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.
