CPU Fans and heatsinks

I have heard that the stock fan and heatsink that come with Intel cpu's is
not a very good setup. Can someone recommend a good setup for a Core2Quad
Q6600 to go on a Asus P5E3 Deluxe motherboard? I would like something close
to the original setup, but of better quality.

Re: CPU Fans and heatsinks

Zalman and Thermaltake are two of the most popular manufacturers. Take a
look through the huge selection at NewEgg.com and just read the user
reviews.

The original is fine as long as you aren't doing any overclocking. Even at
that, many have had some good success with the stock cooler.

I found that heat tends to recirculate around the CPU and its coolers. Not
much leaves the area. I was having trouble getting my CPU temperature out
of the 60 degree C. area when I'm running FSX.

So I bought a 120mm adjustable speed fan. I took out slots for three
devices in the front of the case and rigged the fan there. From there, it
blows right over the memory and CPU area. I turn up the speed when I'm
running FSX, though that doesn't make that much difference. I think it
works because the 120mm size blows out the heat pockets.

The CPU now runs 10-15 degrees C. cooler when I'm running FSX.

I'm running a high end AMD with the stock fan. It seems to be very good.

Re: CPU Fans and heatsinks

I have been considering the Q6600/Q6700 CPUs to replace my P4. I have a
min-tower with a micro ATX board. The power supply mounts (hangs) right in
front of the CPU so I'm concerned about space. Are the stock heat sinks and
fans for the quad processors "taller" than the stock ones for the P4
processors?

Thanks in advance,

Howard
