Vista - Serial Ports, Com Ports and USB

I am trying to connect a device that has a serial port connector to a Vista
computer. I got a converter to plug it into a USB port. When I plug it in I
get a message that it recognizes the device(converter) and has installed the
drivers. When I try to use the hardware that uses the serial port I get a
message that it cannot find a com port. I have tried to manually connect it
to every com port the hardware's software offers, but no luck. How can I
make this thing find a com port?

You may need to enable something in the BIOS since no serial port was
provided on the mobo.

Read the manual that came with the COM to USB port adapter to see how to get
and change the port number it's using. You may also be able to change it by
going to Device Manager, expanding the Ports section, finding your device,
right-click it and select Properties, then look at the Details tab and maybe
an Advanced button if one is located there.

Since you gave no details about your computer at all I doubt anyone really
knows. But hopefully you can look at the manual for the mobo or download it
from the mfg's website and look through it for items relating to serial
ports.

Don't you see the COM port number in the device manager?
Open up the dev. manager, expand the Ports category. It should be there.
