nVidia GeForce FX 5200

This chipset is shown, on the nVidia Website, has being supported by their
Vista beta 2 driver. However, after downloading this file, the nVidia setup
software says that the chipset is not supported: there are no drivers for it
in the package.

Got any ideas?

Re: nVidia GeForce FX 5200

I have a nVidia Geforce FX 5200 128 MB AGP, downloaded beta 2 drivers
(32-bit) and installed just fine. Make sure you downloaded for the correct
platform 32-bit or 64-bit.

There is no install shield included with the drivers. Read the installation
instructions please, and then install via the .inf file.

Re: nVidia GeForce FX 5200

Actually, Richard, it is a full-blown installer for the nVidia Vista Beta 2
drivers.

And as others have said, aside from a flicker or two during the installation
process, it has been running 100% w/o any issues.

Re: nVidia GeForce FX 5200

Naseru is correct.

However, it is possible to point the driver properties, manually, to
nv_disp.inf. The driver thinks the chipset is the GeForce FX 5200, which is
supported; I don't know what the difference is, if any, between the FX 5200
and FX Go 5200.

On the Toshiba laptop, the driver thinks the display RAM is 32 MB, when in
fact it is 128.

I can now get Aero to run, on the 1440 x 900 screen, at 32 bits, but when I
connect up a second monitor, 1280 x 1024 x 32, it defaults to non-Aero.

On the Dell XPS 400, with the FX 6800, still no luck getting into Aero on a
1920 x 1200 screen, even though is shows the 8.8.6.1 driver.

Quoted from the above Forceware release notes:

Driver Installation

Minimum Hard Disk Space

The hard disk space requirement is minimum 30.5 MB.

Installation Instructions

This driver does not include an Installshield. You must use the INF
installation

to install this driver as follows:

1 Follow the instructions on the NVIDIA .com Web site driver download page

to locate the appropriate driver to download, based on your hardware and

operating system.

2 Click the driver download link.

The license agreement dialog box appears.

3 Click Accept if you accept the terms of the agreement, then either open
the

zip file or save the file to your PC.

4 Extract the files to a temporary folder folder on your hard drive.

5 Go to the Windows Device Manager, right-click the display adapter and then

click Update driver from the pop-up menu.

6 Install the driver using the INF that you downloaded.

Windows may default to 16bpp color after the driver install and disable the

Desktop Window Manager (DWM). To work around this issue set the color

to 32bpp and reboot the PC.

Re: nVidia GeForce FX 5200

Very odd... I double-click the EXE file, and InstallShield loads, and
everything installs without any hiccups --> evidence that it is a full-blown
installer.

Methinks Richard Urban wishes not defeat in this matter.

Re: nVidia GeForce FX 5200

I have the exact same video board as the O/P. He could NOT install the video
drivers using setup.

I did install them, by extracting the files to a temp folder and then
pointing driver update to that folder. It found my FX 5200 without any
problem and installed the drivers.

So, do you think it may be worth a shot for the O/P to follow the
instructions in the readme file?
