| | Computer dies I have a Vista Business 32-bit computer which shuts down after about 20 minutes with no warning of any kind, as if the power has suddenly been shut off. Are there any log files I can look at to see if there is any indication what the problem is? My guess is that it is the power supply, but I am reluctant to buy a new supply in case it is something else. The computer is permanently on, (apart from a couple of hours every week), and has been working correctly for nearly a year, so has probably been switched on for over 7,000 hours. Is that the life expectancy of a power supply? Viv |

| | Re: Computer dies As well as checking the internal fans for cleanliness, make certain that the heat sink on the CPU is not impacted with dust/crud. This will prevent proper cooling even if the fan is doing as it should. -- Richard Urban Microsoft MVP Windows Desktop Experience "Viv" <Viv@xxxxxx> wrote in message news 0CD3C15-56A9-41CC-87A3-6E2485A53643@xxxxxxQuote: >I have a Vista Business 32-bit computer which shuts down after about 20 > minutes with no warning of any kind, as if the power has suddenly been > shut > off. | XP & VISTA ULtimate | Re: Computer dies Click on Start Icon Type Eventvwr on the start search box and enter (or Windows button + R) and type eventvwr Check the windows logs ( Security - System & Application ) if there are any error logs post them here. Then scroll down to application and service logs.. check for any errors there? post them here too. if you have checked for any errors that belongs to hardware you might also download Hiren CD as bootable CD when you boot up using this CD you will have great number of tools to test all of your hardware components... You can use Memtest program to do so, as it is one of Hiren CD tools included there. Please Post your feed back Thanks Mohammed J.H |

| | Re: Computer dies I agree with the other posters: this is almost certainly an overheating problem. I bet your processor fan is broken, or covered in dust, or the processor heatsink is dusty. You can do a reasonably good job with one of those compressed air cans, although removing the fan and heatsink altogether for a proper clean is the best approach. It also lets you renew the thermal paste between the processor and heatsink, which can degrade over time. SteveT |

| | RE: Computer dies Thanks to the four people who have posted suggestions. As we are having much hotter weather than usual overheating may well be the problem, although the CPU and PSU fans seem to be working correctly, I will have a go at running the computer with covers remved to get more air to it to see if that makes any difference.
