hi all need help i have upgrade to vista home prem 32bit from xp, but
when doing some things abit taxing (like burning a dvd) cpu overheats
and computer shuts down, never had this problem with xp,
system spec:
mb=Abit nf8
pro=AMD Athlon 64 3000+ 2Ghz
ram=1.5 gb
graphic card= geforce3 ti 200
hd=western dig sata 2 160gb
i have just the standard cooler fitted to cpu, i know fitting a better
cooer will help it from overheating but why is vista maxing out cpu cos
vista upgrade siad my pro was ok other then getting a faster cpu what
can i do

Try cleaning out the dust that builds up in the fins of the CPU heatsink.
You may have to remove the fan to do this..

You would be surprised how much dust accumulates inside a PC so, as Mike has
advised try removing the fan from the CPU and giving the fins a good clean.
You might also try removing the cover from the PC (as a temporary measure)
just to see if the same thing happens when more air is allowed into the
case. It may be that a good clean is all that is needed.

running memory intens program like a games or burning a dvd my cpu max
out and stay maxed out and heatup very quickly(with in about 2 min) then
it just shuts down,
so any more ideas would be helpful

None the less, it wouldn't hurt to give the CPU/Heat-sink a clean out every
now and then with a compressed-air can (available from most hobby/computer
shops).

It is almost certain that you have a dust mat on top of the fins below the
cpu fan. Remove the fan, by unscrewing the 4 screws holding it in place, and
clear the mat. Replace the fan afterwards. Blowing the mat out is unlikely
to work.

Check and remove the dust build-up on your graphics card cooler and in the
case generally while you have the case open.

I see this problem regularly with older systems.

It isn't a software problem, the most common cause of overheating is dust in
the PC case, a clogged fan, a fan that isn't running at the correct speed,
dust on the fins. Have you actually taken the back of the PC and tried
running the memory intensive programs that way to see if the same thing
happens?

It's either that or your CPU cooling fan is dead or almost dead.

Either way... you have to open your computer to look. Don't post back
UNTIL you have done that.

Classic PSU overheating because either the Fan has almost or stopped or full of dust. When the PSU overheats it affects the CPU heat by the low voltage to the CPU fan will not be there completely and also the computer will shut down.

After shutdown I bet you can open again after 5 minutes and things will be almost normal for another 10-20 minutes and the issue will start again
