Disk Read Error: Press Ctrl Alt Del to Restart

I get that message ( in the title) when trying to boot windows. This happened to me earlier today and I used system restore to get back to the desktop, but after about 5 minutes the OS started lagging out and I restarted, and upon restart I got the error again. I'm trying system restore again and I'm gonna try to run chkdsk, but I wonder if anyone else has any ideas as to how I could fix this? I really don't want to format, I just finished reinstalling, customizing and tweaking the hell out of vista yesterday and I really don't want to do all that again.

EDIT:
Okay well now I can't even get to the repair functionality when booting off my vista disc, it says "looking for windows installation" and just stays there. I'm booting off my Xp disc right now and gonna see if I can run chkdsk from the command prompt in there.

EDIT2:
Reformatted drive again...
