Vista Ultimate x64

stumped with getting more than 8 gigs of ram to work with x64 Vista

Sorry its meant to be 4 gigs of ram in subject
Hi

I recenetly purchased 64 bit vista ultimate and i am very frustrated

I cannot seem to get it to load or work properly without it taking ages (literally 5 minutes if at all) with 8 gigs of ram in

As soon as i remove my 2 2gig modules out of the second channel of my motherboard it will load and do everything fine if i do the reverse and remove the first channel but leave the second ones in i get the same result works A ok.

Ive reloaded the OS with the 8 gigs in and have downloaded and installed all 64bit drivers for my board.

PLEASE HELP ME!!!!

Specs
Core2duo E4600 2.4ghz
4x 2 Gigs Apacer DDR2 800mhz
MSI Radeon RX3870 512mb
Intel "frostburg" socket 775 board

Yes the board does support 8 gigs of memory and yes ive checked my ram timings in my bios

Have you checked for BIOS updates for your motherboard? What specific
motherboard model is this?

Try turning off quick boot/post in the BIOS - it will run a slightly more
comprehensive memory check.

Also, try running the Windows memory diagnostic:

http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp

Finally, what do you mean by "...I cannot seem to get it to load..." - are
we talking Vista here? Or the BIOS post screen? If you are talking Vista -
F8 your way into Windows, and choose "enable boot logging". See if there is
anything that takes an unusual amount of time.

prozak,
Many users have had with 4 dims installed either because they could not run
at the rated speed and the user had to slow down the memory in their BIOS.
Or because the power load of the 4 dims was more then could be supported at
the default memory voltage and the voltage had to be increased using the
BIOS.
Any of these user who tried new Dims such as 2 2GB dims in your case had no
trouble or when using one of the workaround discussed above
Regretfully I can not provide more details on these workarounds.
Hopefully one of the MVPs or someone else more familiar with 4 dim problems
will respond to this thread with specific solutions to your configuration.

Re: stumped with getting more than 8 gigs of ram to work with x64 Vista

I think you got it right. Many motherboards will not perform to spec with 4
ram modules. Go into the BIOS and look for ram settings. You can either
manually specify a lower-than-default speed (e.g., set your 800MHZ ram to
run at 667 MHz) or increase the voltage (only safe if your ram specs allow
higher-than-default voltage). I run my 800 MHz ram at 667 MHz and have never
had any stability problems since making the adjustment.

I ran some memory subsystem benchmarks with ram at 800 MHz and at 667 MHz.
On a 1333 MHz cpu bus, there was very little difference in memory
performance. Apparently running synchronously (667 MHz is exactly half the
1333 MHz bus speed) offers an improvement that offsets the slower timing.
