Elements external harddrive not showing up in "my computer"

My Elements 500G external hard drive has worked fine for years but recently it stopped showing up in "my computer" as a drive. I have windows vista and it recognizes that the elements drive is there (the safely remove hardware icon shows up and it appears in device management). I wouldn't be surprised if the drive was dying as I've had it awhile but since it's still recognized by the computer I was hoping there was some way to access it and salvage the files. Any one have any suggestions? (and I'm not particularly hardware savvy so anything that involves taking apart the drive is probably right out)

Is it shown in Disk Management, (not Device's) & what is said about this
drive, if it shows

Re: Elements external hard drive not showing up in "my computer"

I suggest trying the following.
1. In device manager uninstall the drive.
2. shutdown and disconnect the drive and reboot.
3. shutdown again and reconnect the drive making sure that the power is
enabled to the drive and that it is turned on.
4. reboot the computer and see if it shows up.;

I did all that and now the drive shows up in disk management but it says I must initialize the drive. I click ok but after a bit a message pops up saying "Drive cannot find the sector requested" so its still not showing up in My Computer.

Re: Elements external harddrive not showing up in "my computer"

Sounds like the drive inside the external enclosure has failed. External
drives are a combination of two separate electronic devices, the interface
hardware (USB, Firewire) and the physical harddrive that the interface is
connected to. Either one can fail independently of the other. The harddrive
inside the case may fail, or be corrupted, but Windows can still detect the
interface as running and connected.
