Sudden shutdown

So now and then my XP pc shuts down for no aparent reason. No blue screen,
nothing in the event logs, the only thing that happens is a disk control
(checkdisk) when I restart it, but nothing (lost clusters...) is being
found. The power supply has been replaced, but still the same problem. Could
the HDD still be involved even when a chkdsk shows no anomalities? Thanks
for any advise.

Since the power supply was replaced, you know some other hardware component
is failing. The machine could be overheating (check the fan on the
processor), the heat sink could have lifted off the processor, the
motherboard could be dying, etc. It is unlikely to be the hard drive but
you can test with a diagnostic utility from the drive mftr. to be sure.

Testing hardware failures often involves swapping out suspected parts with
known-good parts. If you can't do the testing yourself and/or are
uncomfortable opening your computer, take the machine to a professional
computer repair shop (not your local equivalent of
BigComputerStore/GeekSquad). If possible, have all your data backed up
before you take the machine into a shop.
