| | Freezing problems NOT fixed on RC2! I'm running the WV RC2 64-bit on an Athlon 64 3000+, 768 RAM, GeForce 6600 256 RAM, MB Asus A8N-SLI deluxe, and I'm sadly realizing that the freezing poblems have NOT been fixed! Very frustrating... I disabled the hard disk write cashing, as suggested by Mufaddal on this forum, disconnected all the usb devices (except keyboard and mouse), kept the system very clean (except for Vista compatible Pc-Cillin version), but it freezes! It's still freezing and crashing after few minutes of working, with no apparent reason, forcing me to re-install the OS for the 4th time now! Yes, because after few re-bootings, the file system corrupts and I have to do a fresh installation... RC2 too is totally UNSTABLE on my PC... what a sad discovery... I'm aware that the release candidate of a software is not a definitive version, but I'm also convinced that the major problems, such as these described above, should have fixed long before... In other words I expected little bugs and compatibility problems, not radical crisis of the entire system!! I don't know what will expect to us... Heywood. |

| | Re: Freezing problems NOT fixed on RC2! If you have a dual core chip try disabling one of the CPUs in the BIOS . Also update the BIOS if it is not the current release. | | Re: Freezing problems NOT fixed on RC2! I am willing to bet it's your RAM. It looks like you're using a 512 and 256 DIMM in a board looking for more. I am only guessing here but was that RAM using in an older board and you transferred it over when you bought the new board? The ASUS motherboards can be quite specific about the RAM you use, the chipset, the brand, the configuration and the settings. It can be an absolute bear to get working and figure out. I know, I spent 6 months playing the same game of figuring out why my machine constantly locked up in certain situations. It was the RAM. Plain and simple. It worked fine most of the time and (no lock-ups with just the OS) but when I used something that hit the higher memory ranges BAM, lock up. There is a memory tester in Vista. Run it and see what you get. You might also want to do a Google search for memtest86+ (or something similar.) But the Windows memory tester revealed the issue for me as it tested how the Windows OS will work with your memory. You can search Microsoft.com for a bootable disk version. Either way I would strongly suggest buying a 1GB stick that your ASUS manual says is supported. Better yet two 1GB DIMMS would be nicer but not everyone has gobs of cash hanging around. | | Re: Freezing problems NOT fixed on RC2! Hello Hank, thank you very much for your help... Honestly (maybe because too attracted by the new OS) I didn't consider the RAM matter. But I had too! I think you're right and I will try as soon as possible to pull out the 256 MB dimm and see if the system stay alive for an entire night... I'll let you know! Thanks, Heywood. | | Re: Freezing problems NOT fixed on RC2! Problem solved, finally! It was not the 256 Mb RAM dimm, but the BIOS of my Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe! I did the upgrade to version 1016 and now things go very smoothly... also with the Pc-Cillin. No more sudden freezings or lock-ups! Now I can start evaluating WV. Thank you all for your kind help! Heywood. "Heywood" wrote: > Hello Hank, > > thank you very much for your help... Honestly (maybe because too attracted > by the new OS) I didn't consider the RAM matter. But I had too!
