Windows - No Disk error after installing an external hard disk I am running Windows Vista Business on a MicroExpress MicroFlex 66B computer that was purchased in October 2008. Yesterday, I installed a Western Digital Elements external hard disk. The installation went normally and I was able to load data on the disk. But immediately after the installation, I began to receive system error messages titled "Windows - No Disk" with the text "Exception Processing Message 0xC0000013 ...” Suspecting a hardware error, I worked with helpful WD support person and ran a diagnostic that did not find any disk errors. I then located a number of web posts that suggested a workaround of changing the drive letters. With this as a clue, I then noticed the memory card readers on the computer’s Mitsumi FA402A Seven in 1 Media Drive had been configured with the drive letters E and F. When the hard drive was installed, Windows Vista assigned it the drive letter, E, and reassigned the card readers to F and G. When I disconnected the hard drive and manually reassigned the card readers to G and H and reconnected the hard drive, the problem went away. Apparently there is a side effect when Vista does the automatic renaming that produces the “No Disk” error. I also installed Vista sp2 which did not change the behavior but did generate somewhat more intelligible error messages. The first message after rebooting with the hard drive installed was “LogonUI.exe – No Disk” with the text, “There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive \Device\Harddisk3\DR3”. The interesting thing is that this message was repeated multiple times with “LogonUI.exe” replaced by other executable names. Finally, I am wondering if this problem has been fixed in Windows 7. |
