One possibility. As you say the sound is very faint, are the speakers
amplified? (i.e., do you have to plug them into a power source?). If not,
try your new PC with amplified speakers to see if that makes a difference.
Failing that...
Your best bet is to exercise your rights under the terms of the Compaq
warranty. Compaq is responsible for supporting its hardware *and* the
software that came installed on the new computer. If the PC is truly new (<
30 days) and you purchased it at a retail outlet, simply take it back and
make the seller deal with the sound issue.
