Vista - No sound

i have a new compaq presario with windows vista home premium and i am
experiencing problems with realtek HD audio

My sound is enabled in the BIOS start up...
The only time i hear the sound ... which plays for about a minute is
after the system goes into sleep mode
and awakens and i then recieve a message ...a jack has been
unplugged...a jack has been plugged

i will really appreciate your help

often lost after coming out of "sleep". So, AVOID using the sleep mode!
Microsoft has published a fix for this KB929685, but when I try and install
it, I get a message that says: "The update does not apply to your system". I
did use the correct version (32 bit) of KB929685:

So I'm not sure why my no audio with Vista problem shouldn't respond to
KB929685?

Anyway, I tried doing this:

Control Panel: System: Device Manager: Sound video and game controllers:
expand and right click on high definition audio device: then uninstall the
driver. Then put the computer to sleep and power up again and the driver is
reinstalled. This worked OK, but then since that time, if I use the sleep
mode again, the sound is sometimes lost again. So I went through the
uninstall procedure again, and went in and out of sleep, and it still didn't
bring the sound back. GRRRR... but after a couple of complete power downs
and reboots, the sound did reappear! So this uninstallation trick doesn't
always work and persistence is needed!

Uninstalling and reinstalling drivers is often the first step in solving
lack of sound (and other) problems, but my post may not work for your
problem.

Dear SAM,

I want to give you the following info:
I have a Compaq Presario SR1918, with realtek HD audio and Windows XP
(not Vista).
There is a problem with the audio output and the Headphones output:
After powering on the PC, the loudspeaker (connected to the rear panel
Audio output) works properly
Then, if you connect a Headphone on the front panel Headphone output,
the Headphone works properly, and no sound go to the loudspeaker (it
seems to be normal).
BUT, after this, if you disconnect the Headphones, the sound does not
go back to the loudspeaker !!!!
The sound seems to always go to the Headphones jack (because you can
ear it if you reconnect the Headphone).
I tried many parameters in the "Realtek configuration Audio HD" tools,
without being able to get back the sound to the loudspeaker !
The only way I found is to restart the PC (it's a pity in 2007...)

So, take care of your Headphone jack status, because the displayed
warning "a jack has been plugged" is similar to the one I get during
these actions....

Just try to insert/extract a jack in all your audio output jack, in
case the internal switch is defective.

After having installed the Vista upgrade, the internal loudspeakers quit
working. Conexant audio... Same happened to a friend of mine using a Dell
Notebook. Tried everything so far. Presume it is a Vista problem. Anything
new?
PS earphone jack and SPDIF work perfectly.

I have the same on my HP Pavilion DV1760BR. Neither the Realtek driver has
solved the problem. Any other suggestion?

I have the same problem with my Pavilion DV1760BR. I have tried to install a
sound drive from HP site and from Windows Update, there is an icon and at
Control Panel the message is that the driver is OK, but I have no sound. HP
Technical Suport said that it can be a phisical failure. Does anyone have a
similar situation?

Right click on the Speaker icon in the Notification Area of the Taskbar and
select Playback Devices. Right click in the Playback Devices window and check
both "Show Disabled Devices" and "Show Disconnected Devices" Select Speakers
and press the Set Default button. Use the Configure and Properties button to set
up your speakers. Use the Sounds tab to confirm you have sound.

Also, in the Notification Area, right click on the RED speaker icon and select
Sound Manager, click the Device advanced settings link in the upper right corner
and make your selections. Go through all the tabs and set up your sound and
input selections.

I've been looking through tons of posts for a couple of weeks now trying to
find a solution for my sound problem. Yours have been among the most useful
posts for things to try.

I have 3 Problems

Problem 1: Most .wav sounds are barely audible if at all with volume turned
up to 100% (specs and details below). Yes I've pushed all available volume
sliders up to 100%.

Problem 2: WMP11 does not recognize midi files as music and won't list them
with my other music - there do not appear to be any codecs available for this
on the Windows Media forum - how can I get them to be listed in the music
part of my library?

Problem 3: A few times I have seen where you refer to two different Speaker
Icons in the "notification area of the Taskbar" - are you talking about the
System Tray area? The reason I ask is that I only ever see the one Speaker
Icon - I never ever see a "red" Speaker Icon. Could I be missing some
critical software element which could be a factor in my problems or am I just
not looking in the right spot for this icon?

For the record and comparison purposes for all monitoring these discussions,
here are my specs and my attempts at resolution for Problem 1 (Most .wav
sounds are barely audible if at all with volume turned up to 100%):

Mine is a new laptop (rather than an upgrade). A precious few sounds come
through loud and clear, but virtually all of the default Windows sound scheme
sounds are barely audible. Sometimes movie clips are audible at about 50%,
sometimes not audible at all. Some CDs audible at about 50%. System start
up music audible but clipped and choppy.

After this upgrade, I went back in to WMP-11 and in organizing the Library,
I realized some very interesting things:


The .wav sounds that tend NOT to be audible are the ones installed on this
Vista 32-bit machine, however they become barely audible at about 70% now
instead of 100%. The .wav sounds I pulled over from my previous XP ARE
LOUDER (though not as loud and clear as they were on that XP - probably the
internal speakers on this machine vs the ones on that one), and they are the
same file names as the soft one but with an earlier file date. The .wav
sounds that I pulled over originally on one of my Win95 (yes 95) machines ARE
LOUDEST OF ALL. I sure wish I had ALL of the system sounds from those
older machines, but alas I do not - only about 10 of them.

After that update, CDs (wma) are playing as loudly and clearly as these
speakers allow now, but video clips are still unpredictable - while IN WMP if
they are in my library, they play - if I'm on the internet, they are either
all or nothing (video with no sound, or video with full sound).

Were these newer system .wavs meant to be played back on the 64-bit Vistas?
Would that
cause mine and other people's problems on the 32-bit Vistas? When I was
looking for a Vista codec for the midi files, I didn't see any "free" Vista
codecs at all and only 2 that had to be purchased but neither had anything to
do with any of my problems. Am I looking for these in the wrong place?
