Linksys Routers and Vista Problems

I got a new Toshiba laptop with Vista installed. Trying to set up the
security WEP with Linksys WRT54G wireless router all is well without
security. I can access the internet with no problems. But when trying to
change the settings to WEP the area needed is grayed out so no changes can
be made. Linksys said it is the Toshiba laptop problem. Toshiba says its
Microsoft. MS wants money fee to fix it. I am going around in circles.
Questions 1)
Are there issues with Linksys Routers and Vista? If so what are the fixes?
Question 2)
Would getting a different brand of router work?

TIA for any help.

Re: Linksys Routers and Vista Problems

this may or may not help I recently setup a Linksys router that was having
issues.
you need to set the router up with the software that comes with it using a
hardwire connection.
Once you do this you can choose open or shared and make sure you do this on
the laptop.
You can also use 64 or 128 bit encryption and set it up manually don't use
the automatic setup.
Once the router is setup then set the laptop up the same exact way you set
the router up.

Re: Linksys Routers and Vista Problems

1. upgrade the router firmware to the most recent available
2. reset the router
3. reconfigure the router with WPA or WPA2 (better) instead of WEP
which is not safe and almost no security at all these days
4. configure the wireless laptop the same way and try connecting
again.
