Vista - Recording sound from applications

I am using EXPstudio Audio Editor with Vista Home Premium. When I used this
application with XP there was a recording device "Microsoft Sound Mapper"
that when selected would allow me to record directly from an application.
That device is not present with Vista as far as I can tell. Is there an
equivalent wtih Vista that I can use to record sound directly from an
application?

Control Panel > Sound, right click Recording Devices window and select Show
Disabled Devices and Show Disconnected Devices, do you have and item such as
"What U Hear" (Creative) or "Stereo Mix" (Realtek), if so, set it as default.

Audio in Vista has been reworked, and hard/software not specifically
Vista compliant may not function. For a more thorough explanation see...

Vista's built-in SOUND RECORDER may be able to accomplish what you want.
Depending upon the Vista version being used, it will record in either
WAV or WMA format (not selectable).

Go into your sound card's Record PROPERTIES configuration and enable
"what-u-hear" or similar.

okay!!!! I FOUND A SOLUTION TO EVRYONES PROBLEMM!!! i had the same problem.
get an audio cable that has 2 ends like a set of headphones, and a headphone
splitter divice. put the splitter inthe speaker jack on the computer, and
then put the speakers in one side of the splitter, and then the audio chord
in the other side. plug the other end of the audio chord into the microphone.
record from the microphone jack!!

I sure hope someone is still checking this thread because I'm having the same
issue and the solutions offered arent available to me. I have no " What you
Hear ' option on my built in Vista sound card. I suppose i could do the mini
to mini suggestion but I shouldn't have to. I was able to record directly
off of applications or internet streams on XP. I csn't see why I can't with
Vista, especially because it's so much more expensive and supposedly " so
much better "

Still looking for a solution short of having to purchase an express sound
card. Speaking of that, only ONE card available from ONE vendor? No
choices? What the hell is that?
