| | Drivers requiring permission to load on every boot. I have been waiting for the Vista drivers from USR for the 5699B modem. They were released last week. I have installed them on three customer’s machines and every time the computer boots up I receive the Open File Security Warning for USRLDR.exe and 3CMLINK.exe file. I uncheck the “Always ask before running files of this type” box yet the warning comes up on every reboot. Additionally there is a User Account Control window requiring permission for Modem R3 Interface to run. I sent this information to USR and here is their reply: “Unfortunately this is not an issue that we can resolve; Microsoft may have a suggestion as to how to configure the security aspects of Windows Vista to not give you these security warnings every time you boot up. Our technicians will be looking into this issue in the near future; please let us know if you have this same issue with other installations of the same driver. The issue you are experiencing is related to the Windows operating system rather than your U.S. Robotics product.” Any Ideas? |

| | RE: Drivers requiring permission to load on every boot. Scott, Vista has something called 'User Account Control' and the default setting for this is 'on'. The work around is to launch control panel, select User Accounts and the applicable User Accounts and then click once on the option 'Turn User Account off'. When you select off, it will need to re-boot. When you reboot, you may get the same permission seeking boxes again for the modem items and, if you do, uncheck the 'always check before running' box and then hit run on all dialog boxes. You can then go back into Control Panel and re-enable UAC. The next time you boot the permission boxes should have gone away. If you have further problems with this, post back. The idea behind this security feature is to prevent malware from running. -- freddy "Scott" wrote: > I have been waiting for the Vista drivers from USR for the 5699B modem. | | RE: Drivers requiring permission to load on every boot. I followed the procedure and everything works fine as long as the UAC is turned off. When I turn it back on and reboot I still get the UAC warning. Additionally with the UAC off I get security center warnings. From what I can tell there is no way to turn off the security setting warning for just the UAC. | | RE: Drivers requiring permission to load on every boot. Scott, Well, you can turn off the Security Center Service. That would turn off all the basic warnings you get when you turn off security items, such as the firewall, automatic update, UAC, and who knows what else. A lot of people turn it off to free themselves of the nags. You can turn it off by right clicking Computer and selecting Manage. Then a window titled Computer Management opens. There, scroll down to Services and Applications and highlight Services. Expand the Services window and scroll down to Security Center. Right click Security Center and select Properties. In the window you get, select Disable this service. It will now be disabled and specific security warnings will no longer be given. However, this step is not recommended, for obvious reasons. The better option is to figure out how to stop the nagging involving the permissions. I think there is a way of doing that, but off had it escapes me. I'll research it and be back. In the meantime, go ahead and disable UAC and the Security Center. The choice is yours, however. lol -- freddy "Scott" wrote: > I followed the procedure and everything works fine as long as the UAC is > turned off. | | RE: Drivers requiring permission to load on every boot. Scott, I don't know what folders, shortcuts, executables, etc., that you have from installing those modems. On my computer, I can right click a shortcut, a folder, or an executable, and select Properties. In the window that opens there is a security tab. You can set Permissions under that tab. You'll need to look around using that for a guideline and apply it to your situation. Let me know how that works for you. -- freddy "Scott" wrote: > I followed the procedure and everything works fine as long as the UAC is > turned off. | | RE: Drivers requiring permission to load on every boot. Scott, Her is a site that explains turning off the nags security thing better than I did: http://lifehacker.com/software/vista...pts-230866.php A lot of people do this, including me. Remember, it's not recommended. -- freddy "Scott" wrote: > I followed the procedure and everything works fine as long as the UAC is > turned off. | | RE: Drivers requiring permission to load on every boot. Scott, Here is a good summary of how UAC works (from the Internet) http://www.jimmah.com/vista/security/uac.aspx It's confusing, but once you get the hang of it, it's not that bad. You might want to print and save for reference. -- freddy "Scott" wrote: > I followed the procedure and everything works fine as long as the UAC is > turned off. | | RE: Drivers requiring permission to load on every boot. Oops. Sorry. I have the same problem with the same modem, but my problem goes further. When my daughter logs on with her user account she gets the same prompts. The problem comes when the User Account Control asks for permission to run the R3 Interface. No matter how I set the parental controls, it insists on an administrator password to continue. This is a huge inconvenience as she cannot use the internet if I'm not home or otherwise unavailable to enter my password--which I'm certainly not going to share. Perhaps this is a remedial fix that I just cannot overcome. I've resigned myself to having to give the modem permission to load three times everytime I start my computer, but I'd like to know how to allow my daughter to use the internet when I'm not standing there. Anyone?? Thanks! "Scott" wrote: > I have been waiting for the Vista drivers from USR for the 5699B modem. They > were released last week. | Visa Home Premium | Re: Drivers requiring permission to load on every boot. Partial solution works on Vista Home Premium (may work on other versions) 1) Create a shortcut on your administrator desktop to the c:\windows\system32 folder 2) Copy the files USRLDR.exe and 3CMLINK.exe from that folder onto you desktop. 3) Right click on the desktop copy of each file and under properties page click unblock and apply. (if you look back at the file properties, they should remain unblocked) 4) reboot, login, and when you get window about USRLDR (do NOT answer it yet). Quickly copy 3CMLINK.exe file back into windows\system32 folder using the shortcut (You have to confirm multiple times). 5) Answer pending USRLDR question. 6) copy USRLDR.exe to windows\system folder. 7) Reboot and you are down to only the message about Modem R3 Interface. 8) Clean up the desktop and your done. You have to be quick at step 4 or the prompt becomes "modal" and you cannot do anything but answer it. You could use a program like spybot to disable the startup of USRLDR and then you would not have to rush. Just remember to enable the startup entry after you are done. You have to copy the files to your desktop because "unblock" does not work under protected areas of the system, like \windows... I have been waiting for the Vista drivers from USR for the 5699B modem. .... and every time the computer boots up I receive the Open File Security Warning for USRLDR.exe and 3CMLINK.exe file. Additionally there is a User Account Control window requiring permission for Modem R3 Interface to run. ..... Any Ideas? |
