USB Keyboard Driver Issues

First some background:
I'm a gamer and I had the MERC Zboard installed and functioning on my
installation of Windows Vista Home Premium. I decided one day that my
keyboard was too big and clunky so I decided to purchase Creative's Fatal1ty
keyboard. I booted up my computer and was able to use it but was promptly
greeted by the Device installation popups.

Problem:
Every time I start Windows Vista, it asks for USB Keyboard drivers and I
keep cancelling since there are no drivers nor should their be since it is a
basic keyboard. One time, thinking it would solve my problem, I clicked the
button to not prompt me again. It disabled the device. I tried using my
previously functional MERC keyboard, I came across the same driver issue and
it was also disabled. The latter confused me since the keyboard was already
functional before.

Temporary Workaround:
For some reason when I clicked the option to search for the drivers, I
installed the USB Composite device driver. That didn't work so I uninstalled
all of the composite devices and rebooted my computer. I regained the use of
both my keyboards but I still get the driver popup.

Does anybody know what's going on?

RE: USB Keyboard Driver Issues

Kevin,

The following link contains some USB troubleshooting steps that could lead
to an answer. The site is for HP/Compaq computers, but that makes no
difference because USB situations pretty much have universal application:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/g...name=c00820197

It's hard to tell from this distance what the answer is to your situation
because there are so many possibilities. Just take a look and see whether
something rings a bell. Like, maybe the keyboard is a legacy device not
supported in Vista, just as a hypothetical example. I don't really know.

RE: USB Keyboard Driver Issues

Hey Freddy,

Thanks for the link. I followed the instructions on the page and also
disabled the legacy support on my motherboard and there is no change.
Something I was not keeping track of was how many popups I received but it
now feels as if there is more than usual. What I don't understand is why I
keep receiving the driver request popups even though all of my devices are
functioning.

RE: USB Keyboard Driver Issues

Kevin,

I suppose it asks for a driver because it thinks it needs one. Off hand, I
don't know why it thinks that. Was there something on the referenced site
that could help explain that behavior? Take another look. Maybe you missed
something. One other thing: make sure you have downloaded and installed all
the Vista updates on the Microsoft update sites. Sometimes those fix
problems you have no idea existed. Just something to try.

RE: USB Keyboard Driver Issues

Hey Freddy,

I double checked the page you provided and it only provides support on
non-functional USB devices. I also checked for Vista updates via the Control
Panel but still nothing. Have any other ideas? I'd hate to revert back to
XP.
