VS Filter update

Windows has a solution to one of my problems. However, I don't understand how
to use the fix. It wants me to download file: vsfilter.dll , which I've
done. Then it tells me to install the file. How do you install a .dll file?
Please help, my thumbnails crash individually in each file so it's very
cumbersome.

Thanks,
Itssofun

RE: VS Filter update

Itssofun,

I'd try two approaches: First, you need to know which device uses the file,
and also be able to identify it in Device Manager. If you can do this, use
Device Manager, and under Properties for the device, click on the Driver tab.
Then, click on Update driver and direct the updater to where the downloaded
file is located. If Vista likes the file, hopefully it'll install it.

Second approach, assuming you know which device we're talking about, make
sure it's not functioning (unplug it, disable it in Device Manager, whatever
is appropriate). You also need to know in which file the .dll is located
(oftentimes C:\windows\System32, but not necessarily). Then, I'd copy the
..dll to that location, but only after renaming the old file to something like
vsfilter.old, whatever. Enable the device to test whether all is good.
Anyone else?

RE: VS Filter update

Freddy:
vsfilter is a dll used by DirectVobSub.
"DirectVobSub is simply a DirectShow filter which can be used to display
subtitle. It integrates automatically with any DirectShow player like the
Windows Media Player, Media Player Classic, The Core Media Player and others"
