    Sound trough speakers AND headphones

    Hello,
In windows XP when i want to use my headphones i connect them to the audio
jack in the front of my PC and turn off the power to the speakers(connected
to audio jack in the back) because both audio jacks have the same sound.
This doesn't seem to be the case in windows Vista, here i have to set the
headphones as the default sound device and then restart the program i was
    using.
Is there a way to do one of the following:
-Have both audio jacks have the same sound
-Stop the sound from the speakers and enable the sound for my headphones
when i plug them in like with a stereo-installation.
    Thanks!
    Esben

What audio adapter do you have?

For Realtek, check out Control Panel > Realtek HD Audio Manager. With the
Creative Audio Console and Creative cards you can have the speakers mute when
    you plug in headphones.

    Thanks for your reply!
I have onboard audio on my motherboard (Asus p5b P965)
After what you wrote i decided to install the drivers for them instead of
using the windows vista drivers (on XP i already have the asus drivers
    installed)
Now i have the same sound trough speakers and headphones so that's good.
But i can't seem to find a place with settings that i can change.
Under xp i have an icon in my taskbar where i can change all the settings...

I have the same issue with the realtek...

The system is capable of 7.1+2 and the +2 is not outputting.

The other issue i see is that i do not have a headphone in the audio output devices.. There is no way to add it.

I am having a similar problem as well. My headphone socket works, however the
back analog socket it doesn't work and I can't find anyway to select either
of them. Its as if Vista can only see the one.

I have an Asus P4C800D mobo and I have used the Vista drivers, the Dell
drivers, some old ones from Asus, and anything I can find on the web, still
no joy. The only option I get in the audio control panel is Speakers.

Have you right clicked on the Playback Devices window and selected both Show
Disabled Devices and Show Disconnected Devices?

Is this a Realtek High Definition Audio device?

Have you downloaded and installed the latest Realtek HD Audio drivers (ver
    1.71)?

Re: Sound trough speakers AND headphones

I had spent 599€ (820 USD!!!) for a copy of Vista Ultimate Retail, this is
the price M$ as gift to us (Europe), With Windows XP both speakers 5.1
(coaxial) and headphones function at same time, with "the no sense expensive"
Vista I must switch the sound to speakers or headphones, I can't listen both
at same time, and the procedure to switch the sound isn't so user friendly...
open control panel... restart the application...

I've Asus M2N32 WS Professional, with SoundMax chip.

How is possible that a so expensive OS do less than XP? where's the solution
    M$? if there's...

Re: Sound trough speakers AND headphones

Check your soundcard drivers and make sure they are up to date. Then
check to see if you have an audio control panel (in Control Panel) and
there should be an opption in there as to what to do with your speaker
sound when you plug earphones in...
