Vista - High monitor resolution options not available

I have a Nokia 445xi that I've been using for years on Windows XP at
1600x1200. I just installed Windows Vista Ultimate, 64-bit on a new
system. The display settings dialog only lets me select resolutions
up to 1280x1024. I'm looking for ideas on how to get my 1600x1200
back.

I know that the monitor can do 1600x1200 since I've been using it that
way for years under XP Pro. I also plugged it into a Ubuntu system
and that system uses that resolution. If I remove all my video
drivers and use the Vista standard VGA driver, the monitor shows up as
a Generic monitor and can do 1600x1200 on the current system.

I have an 8800GTS 320MB graphics card manufactured by XFX, but I'm
pretty sure this is a Microsoft problem, not an XFX or NVidia problem
(see below).

I've tried the following:
* Disabling the monitor driver -- no effect
* Uninstall the monitor driver -- no effect
* Connect to an XP Pro laptop (Intel integrated gfx) -- laptop wants
to get a new monitor driver from Windows Update, I let it, then it can
only display up to 1280x1024.
* Remove my NVidia graphics card and use the integrated Intel GMA
X3000 in my motherboard -- 1280x1024 limit still exists.
* If I poke around in the registry, the monitor is listed as having a
max resolution of "1600,1200"

This is a driver issue. Get the latest drivers from Nvidia for your
graphics card. You might also want to check in the Nvidia forums to see
if there are issues with Nvidia's drivers for your card.

I'm checking at the NVidia forums as suggested, but I'm somewhat
reluctant to blame NVidia since two different Intel graphics chips
have the same problem, each using a different version of Windows.

Then blame the drivers of whatever graphics card you are using. Video
drivers are what allow certain resolutions to be set, along with what
your video hardware supports. There's no question that the Nvidia 8800
will support 1600 x 1200, but I don't know about the Intel chipsets.
You'd have to check on Intel's site for that.

You might also look on the monitor's website to see if they have an .inf
file for the monitor. Possibly Vista isn't identifying it correctly.

Are you running the NVIDIA 158.45 drivers? If not I suggest you try them.
Does the NVIDIA control panel properly identify your display?

The 158.45 drivers have the same problem.

The NVidia control panel does properly identify the display (it says
it's a 445Xi).

A few days and many reboots later and magically it works now. I'm not
sure why since I haven't changed any drivers since the 158.45
installation and Microsoft Update hasn't listed anything monitor or
graphics-card related.
