Vista - my computer is reading the hd space wrong.

i had to reinstall windows because of problems.now it is now reading it about
70 gb off.

help,

The reinstall likely kept some stuff from the prior installation and brought
it forward to the new installation. Using Windows Explorer (Start
Accessories), review your hard drive looking for duplicates or any other
extra stuff and delete it.

In addition, you likely have multiple restore points. You can remove all
but the most recent restore point as follows: double left click Computer
(formerly My Computer), then right click C drive and select Properties. Then
click on Disk Cleanup and select the More Options tab. The option at the
bottom of the page that opens is the one to select. It removes all but the
most recent restore point. Now, click on Clean Up. Let it do its thing.

i looked through my files and there were no duplicates i still have no clue
whats wrong.. cleanup helped a little but not much

You're not only looking for duplicates. That was just an example that would
be the most easiest to notice. Looking for these type situations requires
careful scrutiny. Let your imagination be your guide.

Another step you can take is to use a free utility that can remove "junk"
from you hard drive. Get it here:

http://www.ccleaner.com/

Download and install it. Simply use its default settings and let it do its
thing.

I took a look at my hard drive, and here are some more ideas for you to
consider:

If you did an upgrade, some of the OLD system may be hanging around under
file extensions of .OLD. Look for those using the Search function.

My entire Windows folder is about 7.5 GB and System32 folder is 2.52 GB, to
give you an idea of folder sizes in Vista on my PC. Compare your sizes to
those, and if they are much larger, you've found the extra stuff, or at least
their general location. What you can do about it is another whole new
question.
