Re: DVD Burner Stopped Working

I am a network administrator in a school and everyone of our computers has
been losing its DVD rom drives under vista since the end of July updates. I
finally am rolling back all the computers to July 26th and the computers
bring back the drives and I shut off the updates until I guess this gets
figured out. I have one computer running the updates to see when this gets
resolved, but yet to have the drives reappear after an update. (And yes I
have been to the manufacturers site and have the latest update on the drivers
for Vista and these are all brand new laptops - so they are not Vista
upgrades - although the same thing is happening on my desktops with Vista and
I have frozen those updates as well) I hope Microsoft is aware of the
problem.

OK...that's your choice but you may miss out on some important security
updates so you might want to consider monitoring the available critical
updates. Have you tried the registry fix at
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060 ?

The Following was my feedback to the article:
causes more problems; unless a person is really knowledgeble on this
"specific" issue the steps to take to resolve this issue are too complex.
Since 'the industry' is seamingly so willingly to provide filters for their
applications the job of resolving this (major!) issue should be theirs; i.e.
'a commission' of all those involved should be set up all the way from the
hardware to the software. It will become a huge enterprise!
-----------------

And I mean; really massive !!!! I've looked/learned over and under 'n
there's no definate solution.... The matter is so complex that I could
almost call myself an expert, but I'm not. Once you see the big picture, not
only from a soft-/hardware stand-of-view, but (mostly) legally and
commercially. It's a dead end, and I can't take it ! Roxio and Nero have
tools to remove 'things' after (!) you removed their software or in case you
used a specific other. It started with adaptec deluxe 4.0; the upper-filter
drivers got 'sticky' and now it has come to winamp-pro with an upper-filter
driver made by Sonic Solutions (InCD); Px20Help.sys.... Meanwhile WM-player
installs upper-filters, your OS does (IMAPI), ACDsee, InterVideo, Moviemaker,
Quicktime, RealPlayer and more..... And now the end is near ! (lol) Even
end-users are advised to edit their registry ! Now it doesn't suprise me
anymore to hear that sony categorically puts new drives in their laptops when
their is a complaint/malfunction, while the laptop is under warranty.
Anyway, I haven't found a solution for my cd-rw/dvd-rom drive HL-DT-ST
DVD-ROM GDR8162B to make the d@ng thing read dvd. The situation of my Sony
CRX-140E writer is unacceptable. I don't believe firmware or different brands
of media make a real difference; these are all 'patches' and very
time-consuming.... My best idea is to set up a single pc just and only for
the purpose of burning. No second drive; just burn images and then to disk
with w98se and the most reliable version of nero.
Since this is a well-known site and a popular, but most of all annoying,
topic I will stay in touch here. There are so many forums with differnt, but
related (!) topics.
Up to this point I can't give any answers or even solutions becuase it's not
specific enough, including my knowledge. It's only a matter of time before
my Compaq-laptop's dvd-writer fails, It's been half a year ago that I bought
it.
So, I'll come back later with more information.

Best of luck, Shems

Burner problems

RE: DVD Burner Stopped Working

I had the same problem with Iomega burner, they sent me an application that
"scrubs" all of the Iomega software and pointerts.
Reinstalled software and it works.

I am sure that Microsoft has something like it.
