Vista - Unable to install 64bit drivers: display and sound

I am trying to install 64bit drivers on a Win Vista 64bit installation, and I
am being prompted that:

1) this is not a 64 bit system
AND/OR
2) this is not the corresponding hardware.

This is a newly installed Vista Home Premium OS (dual boot with XP), and
*this is* a 64bit *only* OEM DVD.

I have downloaded the recommended 64bit drivers by manufacturers:

- nVidia 7300 GT display adapter
- SB Audigy 2 sound card

Not to say that the OS had not detected another sound card (Frontier Design
DAKOTA), - a pro audio interface for which the manufacturer *has* the 64bit
driver and *is* fully PnP (never had problem detecting it under XP)000.

System is : Core 2 duo (Ausu MB), 1.86 Mhz, 2 GB memory, purchased in
November 2006 (not a 5 years old machine...)

Any insights ?

Rob,

Do you get the same error messages while installing drivers for both the
graphics card and the sound card? Can you provide the exact message for each?

In general, installing graphics card drivers requires that the directions
provided by the manufacturer be followed exactly. Make sure you have read,
downloaded (or taken notes), understood and followed them. If all else
fails, try installing the graphics drivers while in standard VGA mode. That
is, while booting, and after POST but before Windows starts loading, press F8
to get a screen containing boot options. Select the option to boot using
Standard VGA (words to that effect). If you miss this point, reboot and try
again. Now, try installing the graphics drivers in VGA mode following the
instructions exactly. Also, make sure you have downloaded the correct
drivers. Double check.

For installing sound card drivers, make sure you have disabled any
integrated sound card in the BIOS, or if not integrated, have removed the
sound card from the motherboard and from Device Manager. Again make sure you
follow the manufacturers instructions and confirm you have the correct
drivers.

It's unlikely that Windows would report an error message that is erroneous.
There likely is something wrong here, but just what is the question. Report
back.

Thank you very much Fred.

Solved two and a half out of 3... Two sound cards now OK (While I was using
a Audigy, seems like the correct driver was the one developped for both the
Audify and SB Live 24 but.... For the Dakota, had to ''update driver'' of a
detected ''multimedia/sound device''...

For the nVidia though, I left the driver provided by nVidia/Microsoft on the
install DVD of Vista, as I found out that the nVidia driver is still a
BETA... But at least I can do what I was looking for: use my dual monitors
setup... Guess I can update later once the BETA becomes more stable...
