Vista - Unable to find core driver

Hi, I hope someone out there can help.

I've recently got a new pc preloaded with Vista Home Premium, and it won't
install me Epson Photo Stylus RX420 properly. The scanner function works
fine, the printer as a whole works fine on a laptop installed with Home Basic.
In Device Manager, it is listed although has a ?mark in the icon. I've
tried using the Update Driver Software tab in the properties and always get
an Install Error message "Unable to find a core driver package that is
required by the printer driver package". I also get the core driver message
through Printers>Add Printer .
Windows Update recognises that there must be a problem, as it lists an
update that I'm reccomended to install. Problem is that fails as well giving
a message "Error found Code 80070BC8.

I checked the Epson website looking for your printer to determine how Epson
is supporting it in Vista. I could not find your printer included on the
site. Look here:

Your problem likely is a driver problem that is not Vista compatible. You
need a Vista compatible driver. There may not be one available , but I
didn't exhaust all the options. Try contacting Epson to determine whether a
Vista driver is available for your printer, or whether they have some other
solution for getting your printer to work properly.

Unfortunately it's not that easy! It has apparently been available since
January.

I've been in contact with Epson, and they say it must be a microsoft
problem. I've emailed Microsot support, and they've basically told be to
trawl the forums. So here I am.

And the frustrating thing is it works on a Vista loaded laptop

OK, you've already plowed the ground I was replowing, but I didn't know
that. All I can offer is some guidance about installing a printer and
operating a printer, etc. here:

That site has some links, near the bottom, you can click around to see
whether you can find some information to help resolve the problem. Sometimes
uninstalling a printer, rebooting, and the reinstalling it can resolve
problems. Other than that, I have no additional ideas. This all assumes
that you have fully compatible Vista drivers. Hardware not working properly
typically points to a problem with the drivers.

Thanks for your time and efforts.

I've had a look at the link, unfortunately the printer doesn't appear in
Control Panel>Printers for me to try deleting/uninstalling it. I've tried
uninstalling and reinstalling through Device Manager but keep getting nowhere
fast.

Is there a way of copying the relevant "Core Package" files from my laptop
incase these are somehow corrupt on my destop?

The only other thing that I can think of is to reinstall Vista?

As for having fully compatible drivers, Windows Update seems to be trying to
install an update but won't follow it through.

I agree it must be a driver issue on my desktop, I just can't seem to clear
it.

In Control Panel > Printers, have you gone to Menu bar (ALT if not visible),
File > Run as Administrator > Server Properties and on the Drivers tab, to see
if your printer is listed there and Removing it?

Mark,

The printer must appear in Control Panel > Printers to function properly.
In Control Panel > Printers, can you select Add a Printer and make any
progress? Also, printers don't display in Device Manager, except perhaps
under Universal Serial Bus controllers if it's a USB device. The scanner
could show up there.

If you have the drivers, try reinstalling over the existing installation.
You should use the Add a Printer feature to do this, unless Epson instructs
otherwise. Follow their instructions. I don't pretend to know more than
Epson.

The Control Panel > Printers has a utility for uninstalling a printer driver
under File > Server Properties > Drivers tab. Click on uninstall button on
the bottom.

Sorry mate, unfortunately the only driver listed is the XPS Document Writer.

When I got to add printer it first appears as not digitally signed, but
after clicking Windows Update then appears signed. However, it still
displays the message "Printer not installed. unable to find a core driver
package that is required by the printer driver package"

Well, now we know that the drivers aren't installed. The printer won't work
without a driver. Just in case, try installing the driver, using Epson's
instructions, by right clicking the installer file (whatever you have) and
selecting Run as Administrator. This may have nothing to do with the
problem, but even a shot in the dark sometimes hits something.

I think the real problem, however, is that Windows in not installing the
driver because there is a core package missing, as best as I can tell from
the message you're getting. Windows knows what it needs to install that
driver. I can suggest that you follow up on that line of thought. Maybe
downloading the driver again. Make sure you have the correct driver. Double
check. Did I miss something? I'm not sure.
