Installing new hardware.

Hey,
I have recently bought an ipod and when i plugged it in for the first time
installation wizard acknowledged it there and i tried installing it but it
wouldn't work and i was left with the message:> 'Cannot Install this
Hardware' There was a problem installing this hardware: Ipod. An error
occured during the installation of the
device. The data is invalid.
I have re-tried installing it and continue to get this message. My brother
has an ipod that worked fine on this computer up until him going overseas in
may so i am very confused as i am absolutely hopeless when it comes to
computers anyway. Can anyone help me?
Ps i am using windows xp, Cheers

RE: Installing new hardware.

Sean,

Sometimes resolving USB device driver recognition issues like you seem to
have can be resolved by deleting the INFCACHE.1 file, which can get corrupted
with bad data and cause issues like you appear to have. The file is
locatedat at: C:\Windows\inf. There, scroll down to the INFCACHE.1 file and
right click it and select delete. To do this, you will likely have to give
yourself permission to delete it, because of Windows built-in Security.
Just right click the file, select Properties and then click on the security
tab. If you manage to install the iPod, update to the latest version of
Apple's software, as the software has had compatibility problems with Vista.
Let us know whether this pocedure does anything. Sometimes it does and
sometimes not.

The problem here is that you've posted your XP question in a Vista
newsgroup, and are getting suggestions that pertain to Vista and that may
well not be effective, or advisable in XP.

You should find an appropriate Windows XP group for your question, like:

microsoft.public.windowsxp.general

microsoft.public.windowsxp.hardware

Re: Installing new hardware.

Did you install the correct software BEFORE connecting the device to your
PC?
