Re: USB Device not recognised

Cal Bear 66,

I have been through your instructions step by step, as follows:

Start Point a) Printer (Canon Pixma MP530) USB Cable disconnected, b)
Computer (HP Pavilion) turned off and unplugged at the wall.

1. Disconnect the printer USB cable.

Already done (See above)

2. Boot up your computer.

Power back on at wall, booted up as normal

3. Control Panel > Printers, right click the Canon printer and select Delete.

Into Control Panel>Printers, Canon Printer not shown, proceded to step 4
below.

4. In the Printers window: Menu (ALT key if not visible) > File > "Run as
Administrator" > Server properties... > Drivers tab, highlight the Canon
printer and press the Remove button, Apply. OK. Close Printers > window.

Into "Run as Administrator"
Windows needs your permission to continue, permission given.
Into "Drivers" tab
Highlighted
Canon Inkjet MP500 Series
Canon MP530 FAX
Canon MP530 Series Printer
Selected "Remove"
Windows asked "Do you ant to remove the Driver(s) only or remove the
Driver(s) and Driver Package(s)?". Not sure what a "Driver Package is so
opted for removing Drivers only.
Asked "Are you sure", replied "Yes"
"Apply " button greyed out but drivers no longer in list
Closed window

5. With USB cable UNPLUGGED -- R E B O O T

PC Restarted

6. Run the Canon setup file.

Ran "Setup" file, gave permission to continue
Various installation notifications, then
"Installation complete" - told to "...click "Complete" and confirm printer
is connected and turn on printer.
Clicked "Complete"

7. Plug in the USB cable ONLY when prompted and power on the printer .

Plugged in USB to printer
Turned printer on
Dink-donk "USB Device not Recognised"

8. Reboot when prompted -- WITH THE USB CABLE STILL CONNECTED -- do NOT
unplug the cable or power off the printer at this point

Not prompted to reboot.
With USB cable still connected and printer power on, rebooted anyway
Printer STILL not shown in Control Panel>Printers
USB Cable pulled out and reinserted
Dink-donk "USB Device not Recognised"

Now what???????????????????????????????????????

I am going to try for a bit longer before I return the whole lot to the shop
and request a return of my money.

This is just about driving me NUTS........ I am really approaching the end
of my tether and will soon get a sodding great axe to the lot of it. Damn you
HP, Microsoft and Canon damn the bloody lot of you.

How do I contact this Wilson Chappie?????????

Alan Morris is the gentleman's name.

I also found the following post this morning from someone with a Canon printer
problem. (Although, not sure it applies since he did not quote what he was
responding to.):

"I spent hours having this same problem. Canon support was no help. They had me
jump through hoops and even after talking to several 'senior engineer', they
could not figure it out. Of course at that point it became my "system" that was
at fault (ha ha).

I managed to dig up the driver install log file and found that the install was
incorrectly searching for the file "usbscan.sys" in the folder
C:\Windows\Drivers and C:\Windows\Inf

Well, guess what, it's not in either location on Vista!

I don't know if this is the location you will find it, but on my computer it was
located in C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\sti.inf_727905e0

If you don't find it in that location, just search your C:\Windows\System32
folder for it.

Once you've found it, copy it to those 2 folders,
C:\Windows\Drivers
and
C:\Windows\Inf

Run install again and everything should go smoothly with no more stupid errors
(at least it did for me).

Hope this works for everyone.

And just FYI, Canon told me "You are not the only one having this problem". So
I took great joy out of being able to call them back and TELL them the solution
to tell everyone to try. Maybe I should send them a bill

-Kevin"

Re: USB Device not recognised

When I attach a USB Freecom hard disk I can't find it on my laptop. It
doesn't appear in My computer. In the device manager it says it is working
fine. Is this the same problem that this lengthy discussion has been about?
And is there a way of getting it to appear?
