Vista - patch for external monitor with Vista laptop?

I hooked up an external monitor to my Dell laptop running Vista Business.

It works most of the time, but pops up with an error message requiring a
restart every once in a while. Frequently enough that I've just been using
the laptop monitor. Would like to fix it and use my large LCD.

Heard this is a known issue and that there is a patch or hotfix for it.
Couldn't find any ref here or in the KB.

Ring a bell? Link? KB number?

Never heard of any such patch. Sounds more like a driver in need of
updates.
