cd-rom and dvd-rom won't show or appear in device manager or anywh

my dvd-rom and cd-rw won't register when discs are inserted.I tried fixing
this by going to device manager in XP(my OS), and cd-rom drives is not an
option and doesn't show up there or in My Computer. I was wondering how to
fix this.

Re: cd-rom and dvd-rom won't show or appear in device manager or a

I did the guided help for the filters and got a response:
'The UpperFilters and Lowerfilters registry values that can cause CD access
problems do not exist on your computer.'
...this may be because I did this earlier looking at the forum, and then
restarted the computer, but they still weren't reading. I tried it again and
thats the message I got. Should I undo this?and try something else? I
appreciate the help,
