| | Windows Vista/Media Player 11 wont recognize cd/dvd writer hi i was trying to burn a cd a while ago and then i realized that media player11 wont recognize my cd burner, so i cant burn anything. i looked around and saw that if i right click on my cd drive and click on properties, it should have a recording tab that can "enable burning" , but i dont have that. i am using a samsung sh-s182d cd/dvd writer and it wasnt listed as a compatible device under the vista compatibility page. is there anything that can be done to make it compatible? specs: vista home premium 64 nvidia 8800gtx intel core2quad q6600 samsung sh-s182d |

| | Re: Windows Vista/Media Player 11 wont recognize cd/dvd writer thanks but it didnt work but at the bottom it said this: This procedure may not work in all cases. This is only a workaround in a situation where the CD-R drive or CD-RW drive is capable of functioning in Windows XP and for some reason has been misidentified. If the drive is not on the Hardware Compatibility List (HCL), the drive may not work with the built-in CD copying functionality, regardless of this registry setting. i dont think my drive is in the hardware compatibility list so is there anything else i can do? | | Re: Windows Vista/Media Player 11 wont recognize cd/dvd writer I had an old CD writer that would not work with Vista (it worked well with XP) and this registry fix also did not work. I downloaded and installed the latest firmware update from the drive manufacturer and the drive now works great with Vista. Have you gone to the drive manufacturer's site to see if they have a firmware update? If you do find an update, be sure to follow the installation instructions to the letter. | | Re: Windows Vista/Media Player 11 wont recognize cd/dvd writer If the latest firmware update does not work, then probably your only option is to replace the drive. How old is the drive? I definitely would NOT apply all the firmware updates. You could possibly make the drive totally unusable. Perhaps you could give it to someone who could make good use of it? | | Re: Windows Vista/Media Player 11 wont recognize cd/dvd writer lol actually i cant install all of them at the same time, i think it uninstalls the old one automatically. but i tried an older version and it doesnt do anything either. whats frustrating is that its only a couple of months old, i bought it with this brand new system i built. i guess there isnt a windows update that fixes this? if not i guess i will have to wait for samsung support to respond to see what they say. (i have emailed them 3 times already!! and no response) so if i have to buy a new drive, do i just check the compatibility list to see if the drive is compatible? thanks for your help dude "Cal Bear '66" wrote: Quote: > If the latest firmware update does not work, then probably your only option is > to replace the drive. > > How old is the drive? > > I definitely would NOT apply all the firmware updates. | | Re: Windows Vista/Media Player 11 wont recognize cd/dvd writer Yeah, if the drive is only a couple of months old it should work with Vista. Have you tried UNINSTALLING the drive in Device Manager and rebooting to let Windows re-detect it? Is this a SATA or a PATA drive? Have you tried a different cable, a different cable connector or a different motherboard port? And, of course, checked the jumpers. I Bleed Blue and Gold GO BEARS!
