| Guest | SATA & eSATA hard drive speed poor I get 2.3Mb/S data transfer rate from an internal Seagate 750GB SATA II drive to an external eSATA Seagate 750GB SATA II drive! When I use the USB 2.0 capabaility of the external drive I get 10Mb/S. Drive speed has always been an issue for me under Windows Vista. I am not using any RAID or anything weird. And this is now the same on two different mother boards. Any suggestions? |

| Guest | Re: SATA & eSATA hard drive speed poor Open Device Manager (its in the Control Panel) and then right-click on your hard drive (under Disk Drives). Click on "Policies" and make sure there are check marks next to "Optimize for Performance", "Enable write caching on the disk", and "Enable advanced performance", then click OK. -- Carey Frisch Microsoft MVP Windows Shell/User --------------------------------------------------------------- "Ray" <Ray@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:EAB05448-17EA-44B2-86D8-C0E67921B0F3@xxxxxx I get 2.3Mb/S data transfer rate from an internal Seagate 750GB SATA II drive to an external eSATA Seagate 750GB SATA II drive! | Guest | Re: SATA & eSATA hard drive speed poor Despite your belief, it really sounds like the drive is connected to a USB1 rather than USB2 port. Perhaps the external enclosure contains a USB1 chip. I'd be chasing hardware rather than software reasons. Good luck. Poppy. | Newbie | Re: SATA & eSATA hard drive speed poor Poppy, I don't mean to cause offence but you might want to read his post carefully before replying, his problem is with poor internal sata and e-sata device speeds, a common problem in vista as far as I can tell. My suggestion is to check your BIOS setting also and make sure they are set to a sata mode and not p-ata compatability. (AHCI not IDE) |

| Newbie | Re: SATA & eSATA hard drive speed poor Oh as an aside Ray - if you do this you may need to set this registry value in windows before you reboot: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\msahci\ set the "Start" key to "0" ... after doing all of the above on the systems on this site, we see filecopies across drives going from about 4MB/s to about 60MB/s upward. |
