| | Installing Win98SE on a Vista machine I have an Acer Aspire E380 - Athlon 64 X2 4200+ 2.2 GHz 1GB Ram running VISTA and most of my games, flt sims, etc. will not run on it even though most of them are Microsoft programs i.e. MS Flt sim, MS force-feed-back joystick, MS Combat Flt sim, etc. I thought my solution was to partition the hard drive with a FAT32 partition (which I can do with VCOM System Cmdr9) and install Win98se. On further checking I discover that Win98se has limitations such as 512MB of RAM and no processor over 2.2GHz. My question is: is the 512MB of RAM a deal breaker? I have also been told that it might work but with reduced performance. Any advise would be greatly appreciated. |

| | Re: Installing Win98SE on a Vista machine You should have no problems running 98SE on that machine......you do need to find 98 drivers though. peter "REPINFL" <repinfl@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:A2051C46-E20C-46DD-81A5-346E7109AB18@xxxxxx Quote: >I have an Acer Aspire E380 - Athlon 64 X2 4200+ 2.2 GHz 1GB Ram > running VISTA and most of my games, flt sims, etc. will not > run on it even though most of them are Microsoft programs > i.e. MS Flt sim, MS force-feed-back joystick, MS Combat Flt > sim, etc. I thought my solution was to partition the hard drive > with a FAT32 partition (which I can do with VCOM System Cmdr9) > and install Win98se. In your windows directory open system.ini with notepad and add MaxFileCache=512000 under the [vcache] heading. It's Win95 and Win98 Standard Edition (original Win98) that have problems with CPUs faster than 2.2GHz. Win98SE (Special Edition) doesn't have this limitation. I have been running 98SE at 2.6GHz for years with no problems. Win98SE will recognize multi-core CPUs as single CPU only. Just be sure you have all the necessary Win98 drivers for your system. |

| | Re: Installing Win98SE on a Vista machine If you were to visit the Acer support website, you would soon see that the OP's Acer Aspire E380 computer only has drivers for Windows XP and Windows Vista. There are no drivers available to work with Windows 98, such as video adapter, audio, modem, NIC, etc. Attempting to install Windows 98 on this computer will only result in a disaster. | | RE: Installing Win98SE on a Vista machine Hi REPINFL, If you download and install 'Virtual PC 2007', you should be able to solve your problem. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en Dwarf "REPINFL" wrote: Quote: > I have an Acer Aspire E380 - Athlon 64 X2 4200+ 2.2 GHz 1GB Ram > running VISTA and most of my games, flt sims, etc. will not > run on it even though most of them are Microsoft programs > i.e. MS Flt sim, MS force-feed-back joystick, MS Combat Flt > sim, etc. I thought my solution was to partition the hard drive > with a FAT32 partition (which I can do with VCOM System Cmdr9) > and install Win98se.
