When setup process to reach the "expanding files (27%)", it displays the
popup message with "Windows could not prepare the computer to boot into the
next phase of installation" when installing vista 5456.5 (and 5384)



Does anyone know why?

That is the point where Setup needs to restart the computer the first time.
The message is most likely warning you that Setup does not have a driver for
your hard disk controller. You supply this driver with the Load Drivers
button at the beginning of Setup.

Along with controller drivers in some instances I have seen Goback cause this
issue. If Goback is installed either uninstall or disable it.
