| Guest | in-place upgrade - new registry or not??? I can't seem to get an answer to this anywhere. If I perform an "in-place" upgrade (not a clean install), does the Vista install create a new registry? If so - does it carry-over all the "junk" from the XP registry? Does it just edit the existing registry to to update to Vista, or does it create an entire new registry carying over only the settings from the old? Thanks! |

| Guest | Re: in-place upgrade - new registry or not??? Hi, When you upgrade, a new set of registry hives are created, and information from the old ones is imported into them. -- Best of Luck, Rick Rogers, aka "Nutcase" - Microsoft MVP http://mvp.support.microsoft.com/ Windows help - www.rickrogers.org My thoughts http://rick-mvp.blogspot.com "WJH - St Louis" <WJHStLouis@xxxxxx> wrote in message news 95FD883-0F5C-4ED3-B102-EE1801E22F3F@xxxxxxQuote: >I can't seem to get an answer to this anywhere. > > If I perform an "in-place" upgrade (not a clean install), does the Vista > install create a new registry? | Guest | Re: in-place upgrade - new registry or not??? Thank you very much Rick, for your prompt response!! As an addendum - is ALL the info from the original registry imported (incorrect, corrupted etc.). What factor decides which info to import if not all? If all the info is imported, making a new registry doesn't seem to be much of an improvement - with the potential for incorrect transfer >0 Bill "Rick Rogers" wrote: Quote: > Hi, > > When you upgrade, a new set of registry hives are created, and information > from the old ones is imported into them. > > -- > Best of Luck, > > Rick Rogers, aka "Nutcase" - Microsoft MVP > http://mvp.support.microsoft.com/ > Windows help - www.rickrogers.org > My thoughts http://rick-mvp.blogspot.com > > "WJH - St Louis" <WJHStLouis@xxxxxx> wrote in message > news 95FD883-0F5C-4ED3-B102-EE1801E22F3F@xxxxxxQuote: > >I can't seem to get an answer to this anywhere. > > > > If I perform an "in-place" upgrade (not a clean install), does the Vista > > install create a new registry? | Guest | Re: in-place upgrade - new registry or not??? Hi, If you're thinking that this is a way to resolve a corrupt registry, then the answer is no. I don't have specifics on the exact process, but I do know that there is no way for it to differentiate and be selective about what gets imported. If there are existing problems with the hives, there is a high degree of probability that they will be carried over. -- Best of Luck, Rick Rogers, aka "Nutcase" - Microsoft MVP http://mvp.support.microsoft.com/ Windows help - www.rickrogers.org My thoughts http://rick-mvp.blogspot.com "WJH - St Louis" <WJHStLouis@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:FDFC2715-BE62-4237-9ECC-26C9EF2F9EBF@xxxxxx Quote: > Thank you very much Rick, for your prompt response!! > > As an addendum - is ALL the info from the original registry imported > (incorrect, corrupted etc.). | Guest | Re: in-place upgrade - new registry or not??? I suspected as much - I really don't want to do a clean install - I have a bunch of really cool apps from giveawayoftheday.com and they only work on the original install. That and about 150 other aps I use on a regular basis and would have to reinstall..... what a bummer! :-)) Thanks for the quick response Rick - it took Msoft 1.5 hours with tech support - and they still didn't really answear my question.
