| | Re-install XP on a dual boot XP/Vista PC I have a dual boot XP/Vista installed running fine until a few days ago i got a virus attack on my XP partition that I cannot get rid of. Now I want to re-install XP onto the XP partition. Is there anything I have to pay attention to before format the XP partition and re-install XP. XP was originally install first and then follow by Vista. Thanks Thomas |

| | Re: Re-install XP on a dual boot XP/Vista PC Re-installing XP (which as you point out was running prior to installing Vista, so is on the C: drive) will erase the Vista boot loader, so you won't have any access to Windows Vista; you will only be able to boot into XP. You can work around this by downloading Vistabootpro (www.vistabootpro.org). This is a free application. Install Vistabootpro on Windows XP and then launch the program. Click on the 'system boot loader option and then look in the 'system boot loader install options' section. Click the radio button next to the 'specific drive' option and set the drive for C: Vistabootpro will now install the Vista boot loader. Next click on the 'Manage OS Entries' button and select 'add new OS entry' right at the bottom of the window. fill in the relevant information, I.e., operating system name, OS type and then select the drive which has Vista installed. Finally close down Vistabootpro. When you reboot you should have your dual boot menu back with both XP and Vista options available. If you need to set a XP as the default operating system you can do this by reopening VistaBootpro, going to 'manage OD entries', clicking on the operating system you want as default on the boot menu and then selecting the 'set as default' option. -- -- John Barnett MVP Associate Expert Windows - Shell/User Web: http://xphelpandsupport.mvps.org Web: http://vistasupport.mvps.org The information in this mail/post is supplied "as is". | | Re: Re-install XP on a dual boot XP/Vista PC So I need to set up a dual boot scenario. I can run this without having to restore the Vista from the CD? Will adding an additional hard drive force me to do the telephone reactivation? I am hoping that I won't need to go through that. -- Curt "John Barnett MVP" <freelance@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:F7CD4674-D60C-44FB-B8BF-9E548C587F0C@xxxxxx Quote: > Re-installing XP (which as you point out was running prior to installing > Vista, so is on the C: drive) will erase the Vista boot loader, so you > won't have any access to Windows Vista; you will only be able to boot into > XP. | | Re: Re-install XP on a dual boot XP/Vista PC If Vista is already on your system the just use Vistabootpro to locate the copy of Vista and add it to the dual boot menu. The only additional hard drive I added was a removable one and I didn't have to re-activate but, as the hardware will be different there is a possibility that you may have to re-activate. -- -- John Barnett MVP Associate Expert Windows - Shell/User Web: http://xphelpandsupport.mvps.org Web: http://vistasupport.mvps.org The information in this mail/post is supplied "as is". I think I'll wait until Tuesday to do it then, because I heard there was an issue with the validation system. -- Curt "John Barnett MVP" <freelance@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:A98128CA-C531-4AB5-9658-53668A5E7EAE@xxxxxx Quote: > If Vista is already on your system the just use Vistabootpro to locate the > copy of Vista and add it to the dual boot menu. > > The only additional hard drive I added was a removable one and I didn't > have to re-activate but, as the hardware will be different there is a > possibility that you may have to re-activate. > > > -- > -- > John Barnett MVP > Associate Expert > Windows - Shell/User > > Web: http://xphelpandsupport.mvps.org > Web: http://vistasupport.mvps.org > > The information in this mail/post is supplied "as is".
