| | Stop 0x0000007b after Setup I have attempted to install Vista Beta 2 on my Dell Dimension 4100 (1.1 GHz PIII, 512 MB RAM, nVidia 6200, IDE HD) and am getting a BSOD with Stop 0x0000007b every time I get to the final reboot after the installation complete. I have attempted the installation 4 times and have removed my Soundblaster Live card based on some earlier troubleshooting advice. I only have IDE drives (no SATA, no RAID) with a C: partition size of about 32GB (18 GB free) sharing a drive with a 8GB D: partition; a second IDE HD (8GB) and two DVD-RW drives. I have looked up the advice in this newsgroup, Microsoft Knowledgebase, and other Internet sites and tried all tips that were applicable with no luck. Here is the last section of my setupapi dev.log that shows a FAILURE exit status - I hope someone can understand it and help. Thanks in advance. I am posting the first have of the section here with the remainder in another message due to post limits. Hi Bob. You don't specifically state whether you ran the Update Advisor prior to your attempted installation. Also, you make no mention of whether or not you are installing to a clean partition or if you are "upgrading" a previous version of Windows. A random read through seems to indicate the "Upgrades" are less than ideal. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvist...r/default.mspx |

| | Re: Stop 0x0000007b after Setup Mark, first I would like to apologize for the duplicate posts - I got an error message after posting the first time saying it was not accepted. Also, my full setupapi.dev.log file is in the newer thread. I did run Upgrade Advisor with no issues noted beyond the fact that Norton Systemworks would not run. I am attempting to upgrade an existing Windows XP Home installation to prevent having to reinstall all of my applications. Thanks for the help. -- Thanks, Bob "Mark D. I never could get an upgrade to work with Norton installed. In fact, after uninstalling Norton, I had to manually go through the registry of XP and found at least 20 little landmines left by Norton. After ridding XP of all of them, the upgrade went marginally better, but still far from acceptable. If you read through the various Vista newsgroups, you will find an overall consensus, that the upgrade road from XP to Vista Beta 2 is more of a steep goat path. That goes downhill. (Begin flaming from all Vista-testing goat-herders here.) I strongly suggest that you use a test computer, install a new hard drive or, at the very least, re-partition your hard drive and install Vista as a clean installation. Keep Windows XP as your production computer. The experience is much better, and since Vista is buggy, incomplete and unstable, there is no compelling reason to use it for anything other than testing or curiosity. Additionally, if you upgrade from XP to Vista, there is no rollback to XP and Vista will timebomb at the end of May, 2007, leaving you with no operating system. Mark |

| | RE: Stop 0x0000007b after Setup I had this too with my 6600 card. To get round it go to http://www.nvidia.co.uk/object/winvista_x86_87.45.html and download the earlier 87.45 driver. Store it in a directory and unpack it. Then bring up Vista in safe mode, and update the driver. You have to do this from the system / device manager update - select update from your saved directory. Hope this helps. | | Re: Stop 0x0000007b after Setup As Mark recommended, I purchased another HD (200 GB for $60 - why not) and installed Vista there successfully. Now I have to reinstall the applications I want to use and provide the ability to access my documents from XP and Vista. Appreciate all the help. -- Thanks, Bob "Colin Barnhorst" wrote: > I agree with Mark. Be sure to report your experience to MS. > > "Mark D. You may or may not run into "permission issues" when accessing XP data files, but those have been discussed at length here (and I'm sure other forums, as well). Two minor issues: 1. Because both XP and Vista use volsnap.sys with System Recovery points, XP will delete those made by Vista. There are two solutions, and neither are particularly simple: one is to enable BitLocker so that the Vista drive will be encrypted to XP. The other is to use your disk partitioning software to "hide" the Vista drive from XP. 2. Vista will modify the boot sequence and add a rudimentary boot manager, which is what gives you the ability to choose which operating system you wish to run. Download and install VistaBootPro in XP, which is a nice graphical front-end to manipulate the boot files. This way when you get the RC1 release, or you just get tired of Vista, you can put your XP boot files back in order. Other than that, good luck and enjoy! Mark |

| | Re: Stop 0x0000007b after Setup Looking at your logs it complains about your printer(try just leaving it disconnected during setup) and your cd/dvd rom drives/controllers ({4d36e97d-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}). Most likely you may be running older, uncompatible cd/dvd drive emulation software such as Daemon Tools or an old version of Alcohol 120% which may be causing the issue. Maybe check for that first.
