I have been having trouble installing vista on my machine. I got the dvd
direct from microsoft, and my computer checks out on the update/compatability
tool. When I started to install, I got to the firt "checkpoint" easily and
then it went to restart. When it was restarting it got to the black screen
with the progress bar that just says microsoft, and then it blue screens on
me. I have tried to re-install, but I keep getting the same result, seems
like I'm missing something. Any suggestions?

Your system may require drivers for the hard drive controller. These are
entered at the Load Drivers button on the Setup screen when you are
selecting the target partition.
