downloaded windows update McAfee corrupted and files wiped out

Vista Ultimate x64 - This is the second time we automatically downloaded some windows updates (not sure which ones -my son did it). McAfee is corrupted and files started to dump. Can't restore to an earlier date and will now have to reformat. Tried to uninstall McAfee and reinstall- nothing works and now all my programs/files are gone. Why does this happen? thanks in advance for your help.

Keep the above link for next time.
Avast is 32bit and 64bit vista compatible.

Norton, McAfee and trendmicro stop a successful System Restore. You have to
    disable them before doing it.

Have you tried tapping F8 right at startup, and going into Safe Mode.?
With only the basics running in Safe Mode, you have a chance of success.

Though I agree that one should *definitely* not use Norton or McAffee

and I can believe the system is now corrupted...

I find it hard to believe that the data are gone...

Before formatting the drive have a good look.
The machine may merely be booted to a different profile
