Zip icon disappeared

I lost my ability to "Extract All . . .", probably while testing various
Registry cleaner programs. I recovered the functionality (thank you, Ramesh
Srinivasan, for your post on that subject), but the icon for .zip files did
not return.

You know, the icon with the zipper. How do I get that back?

RE: Zip icon disappeared

That's odd - a day and a half later, after 4 or 5 reboots, the icon suddenly
returned.

Nevermind.

Re: Zip icon disappeared

Thanks for the update, Dogger. The icon cache may have updated itself in the mean time. I was about to post a response to this thread on how to manually refresh the icons.

Re: Recylce Bin desktop icon disappeared

Ramesh:

Do you, perchance, know what to do about a periodically disappearing
Recycle Bin desktop icon that always comes back after a reboot? I can't
understand what might cause it to disappear in the first place . . .

Did you click the "Delete" context menu item in the Recycle Bin accidentally in an attempt to empty the bin?

Re: Recylce Bin desktop icon disappeared

Nope. In fact, I've long-ago removed the "Delete" context menu item via
your nifty fix. This is my father's Vista machine and the icon just
periodically becomes invisible for (apparently) no reason at all,
although the recycle bin continues to function as usual. One can, for
instance, double-click the spot where the icon usually resides on the
desktop and the recycle bin window will open. Or one can right-click the
spot and get the recycle bin's context menu. It's like the bin is still
right there, but you can no longer see either its icon or its label. And
as I said, rebooting will always cause it to reappear.

Re: Recylce Bin desktop icon disappeared

Perhaps you can try clearing the thumbnail cache (using Disk Cleanup) if the problem reappears.

Re: Recylce Bin desktop icon disappeared

I'll give that a try when, as you suggest, I notice that the problem has
reoccurred. Thanks as always for your help and suggestions, Ramesh.
