About dual boot systems

Hi folks.

I've already read a lot of articles about dual booting XP and Vista so
I'm sure it is easily done.

What I'm not sure about is just how safe a setup this is with regard
to data integity.

Vista and XP carry out indexing of files and compression of unused
files. Is this not a threat because they both deal with NTFS the same
way?

Are there any other OS processes which could result in either of XP or
Vista's system files being modified ?

Danny.

Re: About dual boot systems

Your only problem data wise is that every time you boot into XP it will kill
your Vista restore points and shadow copies. You can hide the drive with a
third party product or if you have Ultimate you can use bitlocker.

Re: About dual boot systems

Thanks John.

Good information re: restore points and shadow copies.

I will be installing Ultimate so I'll look into "bitlocker".

Thanks again.

Danny,
Fyi...
<qp>
Hardware requirements for BitLocker Drive Encryption
Because BitLocker stores its own encryption and decryption key in a hardware device that is separate from your hard disk, you must
have one of the following:
A computer with Trusted Platform Module (TPM), which is a special microchip in some newer computers that supports advanced security
features. If your computer was manufactured with TPM version 1.2 or higher, BitLocker will store its key in the TPM.
A removable USB memory device, such as a USB flash drive. If your computer doesn't have TPM version 1.2 or higher, BitLocker will
store its key on the flash drive.

Alternative to dual booting option.

For those of us that would like to use another OS, but not have the potential problems with dual booting, there is an open source program that you can use to run the other OS inside of Vista. I currently run ubuntu inside of Vista and it runs very smoothly.

You can download the open source program here: VirtualBox
