Vista - Partitoning Vista drive

I will be using 100GB HD for Vista. I have never partitioned a drive before.
I do have Partition Magic but have not looked at it yet. I was wondering if
it makes sense to divide the HD so Vista is on one part but the other
programs install on a different partition. Would that make reformatting
Vista easier? If it is a good idea how much should be allocated to the Vista
partition. Can Vista do it adequately or should I use PM for making the
partitions. As you can guess I don't understand partitioning rules at all!

Windows Vista performs best when installed on a hard drive
with one partition and the programs installed on the same partition.
Installing programs on a separate partition actually decreases
performance due to the added seek time.

And if you format the drive you will still need to reinstall your apps

Don't bother with Partition Magic.
You can set the size partition that you want to install vista on during
installation.
Once everything is installed, Vista and other Programs, if you have decided
to put vista on, say 60G, you can format the other 40G, and use it to store
your Data.
That way if Vista is lost, you still have your Data.

In the past, I successfully used Partition Magic on several HDs w/ Win XP.
Now I got a new laptop w/ preinstalled Vista Premium and a 160GB HD. My
intention was to create three logical partitions: APPS, DOCS, and BUFFERS.
Uing Vista's own utility (under Control Panel/Disk Management) I "carved out"
a 48GB APPS, and an 18GB BUFFERS. APPS is identified as "healthy, primary
partition" and BUFFERS as "healthy, logical drive". Now here's the rub. I
tried to shrink APPS by 20GB, which was indicated as possible, to create
DOCS. What I got was 20 GB of unallocated space, and when I tried to create a
volume there, I got “there is not enough space available on this disk(s) to
perform this operation� error. I can extend APPS back into that unallocated
space, but that's all I can do. What was doing wrong?
