Blue screen of death on Vista install

Hi,
I've just bought the 64 bit ultimate edition of vista and am doing a clean
install of it over my old windows XP 64 bit edition.
I get to the point where my computer restarts for a second time after
applications have been installed and it begins to boot up but then it shows
BSOD and restarts...
Help.

Thanks
Rory

System:
ASUS striker II formula (nvidia 780i)
QX6950
4gb Corsair dominator ram
2x8800 ultras

RE: Blue screen of death on Vista install

I've fixed the problem, so no one need reply.
It seems that a 64 bit OS designed to run with more than 2gb of ram, doesn't
install with it!
Pulling 2gb completely solved the problem.
This was incredibly frustrating and yet again I feel let down by microsoft.

This is not an uncommon problem, but it appears to be
motherboard/chipset specific. I've installed Vista x64 on my desktop
with 6GB and 2008 on a new server with 8GB without difficulty.

Re: Blue screen of death on Vista install

Actually, it means the mobo is having trouble with all four memory slots
filled when running 64bits.

Try it with three sticks and you'll see what I mean. Depending on the mobo
and the ram, increasing the dram voltage by 0.1volts or dropping the dram
speed back to 667 if the memory is 800 may very well work. Also, there is a
patch which you install at 2GB and then install the remaining ram on some
boxes.

There is no one cause but at heart it is the memory controller software not
being able to keep up with four filled slots at the speed it is being asked
to and is more of a problem with the mobo's engineering than anything else.
It will happen whether the sticks are 1GB or 2GB. The amount of ram isn't
really the issue. A good place to find out what other user's of your mobo
are doing about it is the forums on the mfg's website, if they support
forums (some mfgs don't).
